Mess the mechanistic up
If you triggered the fight, chances are, when you get around to doing the dlc everybody there will already be dead. Just go talk to ida to start it.
I've found it best to start it by level 20 or so, but the combat can be intense at times. If you trigger the quest by getting close, and don't get involved, I've found that it will sometimes fail to progress without using the console (which I won't do). That may have been patched as it happened to me a couple years ago.
The big problem with holding off on this quest, is that the trigger point is a major intersection that you will (probably) travel, and avoiding it without triggering the Automatron Quest is difficult. It's best just to do it. Just be aware that you will get multiple settlement attacks once you start & until you complete it.
As I said earlier, the quest did not trigger the fight as I was able to go there and participate in it. That is after I wandered north of the area and could see lazer firing far from there. But it still did not trigger the quest.
I have no intention to start Automatron right away, after reflexions. I will delay the quest a bit more.
If you do use mods, there is one that mostly eliminates the constant encounters once the quest starts.
Rust Devils won't be the ONLY enemies you encounter, they are added to the ones already in the game.
They always die - it's part of the story.
The DLC has 3 major locations until completion, and along the way you will get a weapon that makes pancakes of all Rust Devil encounters. And you might get a full suit of upgraded PA X-01. You might even find 2 so your Companion can wear one.
Rust Devils will appear more often after you trigger the DLC, replacing random fight location. Finding the Scribe is no problem at all, he will always wander south of Cambride on the main road. And after DLC completion Rust Devil encounters will decrease, but they will not STOP.
Do not be afraid of the Rust Devil, they add a lot to the world. They have better loot (weapons & armours).
The DLC is good and adds a lot to your Game World. It starts at lvl 15 for a reason, and that is that it is DOABLE from lvl 15 and onwards. If you go all in on this DLC from lvl 15 you can expect to level up from 4 - 6 levels, depending on your difficulty. Along the way to the main locations you find a lot of other locations, doing theese along the way too will level you up further.
You will be a better and stronger player after doing it so go ahead and have some fun.
Check this map. The DLC sends you straight to a level 30+ area as the first location to go to. You kinda need to wait a while before even getting started. Unless you don't mind dying and reloading a lot.
But beeing inside General Atomics Factory at lvl 15 is way too hard, agreed. But again it is not very likely to be just at lvl 15 when one arrives there.
