Run and gun is best with the automatics. As you will be playing as a fps, and adjusting point of aim and targeting without worrying about action points or stealth bonuses
run & gun = auto
Semi-auto you generally want to get the stealth/sneak attack perks, so generally a larger investment (perk-wise). Both work fine though.
You can eventually get an infinite ammo gatling laser, so ammo ends up not being a problem, even if you are lazy about buying/looting it and a terrible shot ;)
I still use a pistol though. But mostly a .44 Magnium because of how easy it is to get around 180+ damage per shot without criticals, plus nothing is more fun than firing 6 shots in vats to bring down 8 foes in the head wild west like. lol
Any of pistols, rifles or automatics groups can cover sniping, VATS, sighted and hip fire roles to, at least, an adequate degree (pistols are a bit lacking in long range sniper options but can still work).
Automatics actually make excellent 'sniper' weapons as, with a suppressor they can chain together large numbers of sneak attack boosted shots in no time.
Yes, but you don't need multiple hits when a sneak headshot does 11000 damage (instigating gauss rifle).
Autos take more AP/target - if you 1shot them in VATS, then autos use more AP for less kills.
Also, the best auto weapons (gatling laser, explosive minigun) can't get a silencer....
As a note, your VATS gun should use a reflex sight (lowers AP cost).
(long scopes greatly increase AP cost)
Who woulda thought that huh?:
My point was not to get pigeon holed into certain styles based on the weapon perks you take, nor to necessarily pick weapons based on your preferred style as all three gun groups can perform all styles well.
I did not argue that single shots were useless or even that they were worse...
I will add that as a suppressed autosniper, even a humble, non-legendary .38 pipe gun can shine.
Sniping with a gatling laser doesn't work well (it's the best auto gun, but no silencer & low single shot damage).
Sniping with a Gauss Rifle works better.
And there is no way a normal .38 pipe gun is working well vs a level 300ish super mutant warlord...
actually a .38 auto pipe gun with the explosive effect is better than even the spray and pray
Yes, explosive anything is silly because of so many multiplying multipliers.
(and SMGs are not good base weapons)
(minigun gets an extra x2 to the explosive damage and a higher fire rate, which is why I mentioned it with gatling lasers (Rapid (with charging barrel), or wounding, or two shot or the infinite ammo one) as top auto weapons.
(normal miniguns are low-tier junk though)
I use slow motion with jet chem and critical outside vats with overdrive... With better critical perk that work also with overdrive... The gameplay become totaly different. Using AI optimization and level scaling mods.
In survival, it's good to use idiot savant with this build because using chems lower you intelligence, that help to proc x5 xp from idiot savant.
