Safe Item Storage?
Hello! I recently got into Fallout 4 and have finally accrued enough items that I need to consider how I am storing them. In other RPG style games, I always had the option of sorting my weapons, armor, and items using filters. In Fallout 4, I don't seem to have that option aside from the overly generic "Weapons," "Apparel," etc. filters. I can't, for example, sort out melee weapons from the rest of my weapons.

Because of this, I want to take all of my preferred weapons and gear out of my Workshop and store them elsewhere. I have too many items to comfortably scroll through them all, and it makes locating Legendary class goods a painstaking task. Is there a safe way to do this, where settlers won't take them, or the game won't reset them? I know that, in many cases, items you leave in the wilderness will disappear after a set amount of time, and I also realize that NPCs can interact with them. Does the same hold true in a settlement?

My goal is to craft two or three dressers for my different items, weapons, and gear, and then store everything in them in one of the houses in Sanctuary. I just want to make sure that I won't come to regret it later since I have a lot of good stuff now. :)

No settlers = no sticky fingers taking stuff. That is where I store all my unique legendary stuff that i want to keep for later without worrying about it disappearing. Ammo and fusion cores also.

In bases with settlers, there is NO place you can store chests, etc that a settler cannot get to, because when you fast travel into the hex from outside, settlers randomly move about and appear in different starting areas, including any enclosed, isolated high areas, etc even those that you can't get to due to no stairs, doors, etc. So the only way to 100% keep your stuff safe is to keep it in a settlement with no settlers.

what i do when i need to store specific items for any kind of purpose, (let say i want to store all my best gun in the same container) :
i just built something i can put them into : ex, a safe, or just red tool box, or maybe an army ammo box...

I find it easier to store all my gear in the workshop, except for very few things, like Exceptional guns, or water for ex.

Im no expert but you could probably just build a shed or barn/whatever filled with dressers and chests etc with a powered door and keep it unpowered until you want to get in.

Would prevent npcs from getting in and allows you to store equipd and categorize them how you wish.

Thanks! I didn't think about powered doors - haven't fiddled with them yet. I will give them a try!

Yeah, that's kind of new I think. I've never noticed that before. :D

...Now i just have to figure out how to unlock powered doors. All the doors I have available to me are wooden, with the exception of three, unpowered steel ones. :(

You can use the logic gates in the contraptions dlc (if you have it) to create a two sided door with switches on both sides, or an automatic door with the detection stuff they have.
And even more things with the logic gates.

The tl;dr is turning the power on, or off when needed to open or close the door (power on = open, power on = closed)

Ah, I don't have any DLC. I think that's the problem. :(

I thought I had to unlock it by finding an issue of Picket Fences or something.

Without dlc you can just power it via switch and turn it on/off that way.

I don't know if its a mod or not, but the Red Rocket truck stop seems to be safe from the rest of the game. I use it at the beginning to save things until I get caravans running between settlements, and can get a armour repair setup outside. Then I use the inside for storage of specialty items, like filling the book shelf or wobble head collection. Btw anything stored inside is not added to the communal collection filled by caravans, at least for me.
The author of this topic has marked a post as the answer to their question.

The only way to keep your items safe from settlers, etc taking them is to store them in a settlement that has none. So if you have a settlement in Sanctuary, Red Rocket nearby is a great place to store your valuable weapons and ammo to keep settlers from running off with them.

So the only way to 100% keep your stuff safe is to keep it in a settlement with no settlers.

wherever I "set up shop" I don't use that location as a settlement. No NPC's to steal my stuff. you can set up an outpost for the bunker hill caravans after a coupla of side quests there for a place to sell unwanted stuff.

before i went to this method.... you can open the console to lock the doors on bildings you build for storage you can unlock them through the console also or just pick the lock for the exp.... many a NPC was executited for trespass before this came to mind

you can also buy a "house" in diamond city it has a workshop

Ah, thanks! I didn't know about the random movement. I think I'll take cowboy's recommendation below and just use Diamond City's house as my base of ops since it doesn't have any settlers.

In 1700+ hours I've never seen a settler take anything out of a container. I don't count the workbench as a standard container though, and settlers WILL take things out of it. Honestly don't know why people store weapons/armor/etc in there, especially if they have played previous Fallout games and Skyrim where safe storage is such a major concern... and it's an easy assumption that at the very least, items in the workbench could be disassembled into uselessness while building.

Just plop down any container in build mode, and throw your stuff in there. I tend to use a bunch of different containers to make sorting easier, like the metal box for metal armor. I've read that containers already in settlements (ones you didn't build there yourself) may not be safe and will spawn random junk objects in them; I've seen *my own containers* spawn junk objects if I left them empty, so I honestly don't know what's up with that.

Now, power armor is a whole other thing. Even without a core in it, I've seen a settler summon one from thin air and hop in. Ever since then, all my characters have their power armor stashes at empty settlements.

Settlers will only take weapons from storage if they can find compatible ammo nearby. I've learned that ammo doesn't need to be stored in the same container, or ANY container actually, as during the M A J O R--S T O R Y-- S P O I L E R Brotherhood attack on the Railroad Big D swiped my Railway Rifle and Railroad spikes, which I had just tossed on the ground.

Also, you can sort your stuff, but not manually. You can sort by things like Value, Weight, Rate of Fire and Damage.

why do you store ammo and fusion cores? they don't take up space
