Which is *less* depressing? Witcher 3 or Fallout 4?
This is not a comparison of the merits/"betterness" of the two games. I just struggle to wade through games these days that are *all* doom and gloom. A little? Sure. Realistic story? Sure. But most GOOD stories, IMO, share elements of happiness, hope, redemption and joy as well as sadness, disappointment, guilt and depression.

These two both seem pretty glum. But for those that have played both, what do you think? Will they both depress the hell out of me? Or are the redeeming moments of laughter/happiness in one/both?

And no, the violence alone does not make me happy, per se.

The witcher 3 has alot more moments with its quests that can end pretty gloomy or happy, depends if you are playing as a jerk. But besides that the world is pretty gloom, and if you go through the bloody baron questline you will see that the world is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.
Fallout 4's main theme is the question if an artificial person can be considered human. all the major faction take a stance on this subject and at the end you need to choose who will guide the commonwealth to the future. The world can be bleak sometimes, but you have the chance to bring a little bit of hope to the commonwealth. That is if you feel like doing endless radiant quests for settlers.

Thanks, sander. Really appreciate the input. Leaning toward FO4.

Witcher 3 is not doom and gloom all the time, there are some uplifting moments in it to. Also more funny parts than Fallout 4 has. Witcher 3 is better in nearly every way imo.

Witcher 3 has brilliant writing, Fallout 4 has trashy writing (after New Vegas was wonderfully written), has better graphics and better gameplay imo. Fallout 4's only advantage is the setting imo.

And this is coming from someones whos fav series ever is Fallout.

Less depressing game? Witcher 3 imo.

FWIW, I found TW2 to be pretty damn depressing. Is TW3 "brighter" in spots?

I also have the time factor. FO4 appears to be a shorter slog than TW3.

I hope I have the time to burn on the latter sometime, but now might not be it. Still weighing...

I haven't played W3 yet, but F4's story isn't particularly depressing unless you are extremely successful at immersing yourself in the main character. I find the very begining of the game is actually quite good at dispair, but it goes immediately downhill after that.

The story tries to instill a sense of urgency in you at the beginning, then it throws side missions at you in the hope something sticks.

Thanks, Gon. I realize FO4 looks like it'll be less...fulfilling, but I may have to compromise based on time alone, I'm realizing.

i downloaded witcher 3 and could hardly run the game. i guess waving hair in the wind OMG graphics have a price. ive heard from a friend that its running smooth now, but such games were never able to suite my taste.

what gon said, the main story can be either a story of fortune, or a story of rushed loneliness. its mostly the side quests that help you out. make a faction powerful, meet a ghoulified kid in a fridge, hear 2 raiders talk about how they helped a guy from his fear of fire (and accidentally drowned him). i like it how even random npc's have story on them, or you walk into a group of enemies and hear them discuss their last fight or meal. im still sad that the AI is as dumb as rocks though. stay hidden long enough and they forget you were ever there, but i guess every game has that.
