from what i've been reading. when you get to the point in nuka world where you invade settlements, it looks like his trigger is putting down a flag for the raiders.. so far this is all i know but if you don't put down a raider flag for one of the missions you won't lose him.
though i haven't seen a reacharound for it yet.
edit: i guess he can give you the "open season" quest to kill all the raiders but you got to go to him BEFORE you invade a settlement for the raiders... i didn't do that.. also i shut down michelle in the nuka world market place so she can't trigger open season either... this playthrough is bust. it looks like i lost preston for good on this save.
It took me quite a while to check on this one, since I had to make a whole new character for it (none of my existing characters were usable, usually because they'd already met Preston). I haven't checked out what happens if you get the Open Season quest from someone else, but it works if you get it from Preston.
So to keep Preston as a companion, you either have to avoid invading the Commonwealth, or only invade before meeting him.
He goes immediately and irreperably hostile if you are part of the Minuteman Faction when you join the raiders. One of his "Triggers" is betraying the Minutemen. This precedes Nuka World, as if you kill any Minutemen in-game (Even if he's on the other side of the planet) he will attack you on sight.
So likely, the real cause of his hostility, is killing the Minutemen who guard settlements when you attack them (The flag could also be a trigger, but I've put flags down before and still got Open Season), if you are not part of the Minuteman Faction (Even if you have claimed settlements through the minuteman quests) Musket-wielding "Mercenaries" Will defend the settlements instead, and are not tied to the MM Faction.
From my experience, while he'll go hostile if you kill Minutemen, this is only temporary hostility that wears off after a few in-game days (just like when you get caught pickpocketing).
The trick is never to join the faction. You can rescue everyone and lead them to Sanctuary, and even do "The first step" but you must reject the offer to Rebuild the Minutemen. Unless they patched this last time, in which case I need to hold on to my save forever since it represents a game-state that can no longer exist.
Since it's about losing his companionship, I have a feeling it may depend on whether he's gotten to the stage of agreeing to be your companion (which happens about the same time he accepts you as the General of the Minutemen).
Sorry, done helping the ungrateful peasants (not OP) today
Do the raider settlements require slave settlements or?
How many settlements need to be captured? If this is done early game there shouldnt be anyone there right? Like is it possible to give empty settlments to the raiders?
You need at least 8 raider outposts in order to unlock all their buildable objects; you won't be able to keep building all of them after turning on the raiders, but you'll have use of any objects built in settlements that you take back (you can reposition them as well, just don't store or remove them). But if you're only interested in completing the main quest and getting the perks, you'll need just three raider outposts.
