Yep, Danse is the only exception.

It does indeed, except for Paladin Danse as he's not supposed to be out of it, save for a certain quest. But for every other companion, the armor will break as though you're wearing it.

They don't require fusion cores though! 8-)

I'm wondering now what it is they do with Danse to prevent it from breaking. Does he actually have some genuine power armour that can't break, or is it more like his actual body model is power armour when we see him in it?

No, you can get him out of it via console and some tricks (like spamming sleeping with him as your companion) and wear his, it's actual power armor. And when you wear it, it can break, so it's something about Danse himself. He's magic haha.

Like pre-blind betrayal it's normal BOS t-60 (I think) Paladin power armor, and post-blind betrayal it's normal military X-01 power armor. But something about his script makes it a lot harder tog et him out of it AND makes it unbreakable, but only while he wears it.

Hmm, that means there's something operating that could apply the same effect to other characters if they had it.

What happens if he gets out of the power armour and then back in? And what happens if you put different pieces of armour onto the frame before he gets back in?

It becomes unbreakable again. And you can customize it all you want, switch out the pieces, etc, it's still unbreakable. Like essentially, his script makes it so any power armor on the frame he is wearing is unbreakable.

No, it's got nothing to do with scripts, it's just a completely different object with its own unique ID that's flagged to be invisible in the inventory (which is why you never see it unequipped if you give him X-01 pieces and he puts them on) and just straight up doesn't have HP.

The same goes for all of your companion's default weapons: they're unique items that are invisible in inventory, but instead of using regular ammo they use unique ammo (also invisible) that's permanent instead of consumable.

Wait, what is a different object? The frame? I've had him wear my armor and it doesn't break for him either. Granted, I suppose that could be because we mow through enemies and the pieces have a high HP....

Is it only that frame, or does it also happen if he enters a different power armour frame?

It's been a while since I experimented but looking back on it, it might only be his frame. I could be wrong though. I thought I remembered him not breaking my power armor but now I'm not so sure :P

Regardless, his frame is still customizable and will still be invincible.

I can see a number of different ways it could work; it could be something Danse has (either on him as a character, or invisibly in his inventory), but it could instead be something on his personal power armour frame (or likewise, invisibly in its inventory).

I assumed it was in his script because as far as I have seen, it's universal for him. But that could also be because of something on him.

This is just speculation on my part, but I still kinda think that it's something about his script, just because I've broken his power armor when I wear it but (as far as I can remember, last time I experimented with this was back in May) he's never broken any of my power armor. And I don't see how it would be the "special" unique, invincible power armor frame if I break it when wearing the frame and he still doesn't break it when wearing another frame, which makes me think it's not an unbreakable frame, but an unbreakable Danse :P
