Codsworth won't speak to me in the very first quest

During the quest Out of Time, as I get to Sanctuary, I accomplish the objective "Find your home", get the objective to talk to Codsworth, but whatever I do he just doesn't speak to me.
- I smash the E button, resulting in my character calling out his name, nothing happens.
- I reloaded a previous auto-save, didn't fix it.
- I even went through the console disabled/enabled him, killed then resurected him, ResetAI and ResetDialogueFlags. Nothing seems to be working.

Is there anything I can do or should I just go ahead and refund this game since the very first mission is bugged out?

Also having this issue, because of codsworth not spewing his effing lines it also seems to have screwed all the other quest related NPC's in my game aswell. Now i've tried everything i can think of and done several clean installs but this bug is persisting and it makes it basically pointless to play this game. Bethesda, Bethesda never changes......

Do you have any mods installed? Or dlc? Did you download the game directly from steam or did you use the retail DVD? Those could be possible factors in the problem, maybe try reinstalling the game?

Nothing I did ended up solving anything, so I just restarted the game, which solved it. Thankfully since it's basically the first quest it didn't take me long to catch up, but still, rather annoying.

The Great White Dragon : As for your question, at the time of the issue, I had no mod installed, no DLC installed and I had downloaded the game directly from Steam. I didn't end up trying to reinstall the game, since I figured that it would take me less time to just restart the game rather than re-download it.

I had this problem and have both mods and DLC installed. I will inistall and reinstall to see if it fixes, I also saw a window in steam saying fallout needed to update but it couldn't.
Oh and Preston will not talk to me after I clear out all raiders and deathlcaw for concord quest. making it so i cannot progress

I've never tested this myself since I always start a new character with high charisma but when you think about, why the hell would you need CHR to talk to a freakin' machine? I would think INT would be a lot more useful. XD

I realise this is a bit late, but this page is the top google result.
I had the same problem, but didnt want to start over, after some button mashing it seems the dialog options are still there, just invisible, just hit a random direction and it will fix it.

this tells me you got CC content installed

navigate to: Steamapps / common / Fallout34 / data
create a new folder and drop

ccrzrfo4001-tunnelsnakes.esm
ccswkfo4001-astronautpowerarmor.esm

in the new folder. Start a new game rescue the minutemen from Concord and then Drop those two esm#s back in place

When start new game, ensure all dlc and club is not install, and any mod that cause questline as well. then after that quest are done, then install one by one when you need it. personal I don't install habor or autorobot dlc till I'm done most vallin version game quest, then install one by one after I am done with quest by one by one, to be safe with less bugs.

Yes, that is major problem, but still dlc even officel cause some later on quest mess up. I rather get that normal version quest done, then install dlc or/and CC and only use mod when you are done with all main and side quest to be safe.

besides that two creation club add on - i never encountered problems using the official DLC's and all the other CC contents

Like a emogene stuck in her room "Cabot House" where she should be in Charles View Amphitheater when DLC and CC installed, I tested without DLC with new game, I had no issues with this quest for exemplify while all DLC and CC as almost high chance or almost everytime got this bug unable to get quest done. It's seem DLC and CC increase bug with original quest.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I SOLVED IT AFTER WHAT 8 YEARS

okay so long story short, there are many many many damn quests that are unlisted. I typed help codsworth in console saw several quests and tried one at a time setting the stages till i found the right one.

The quest name is DialogueCodsworthPostWar or number 0001e64e

Now it has multiple stages, this is where the bug starts specially if you have creation club content since sometimes it skips a stage.

I was missing stages 15 20 30 35 250 275 and 300

So how to solve this type the following in console one at a time and exit console and count a second or two then enter the next

first look up which stages are skipped on your end by typing the following

showqueststages

Now you do not need to set 500 or 1000 since thats after you get him as a companion

Write down or just scroll up and get each one

Now do the following with the stage at the end

setstage 0001e64e (stage number)

example again mine looked like this

setstage 0001e64e 15

[exited waited 2 seconds went back]

setstage 0001e64e 20

and so on till i got to 300 and bam you got Codsworth unbugged and able to be a companion

I know this thread is super old but wanted to get this solution posted out there for people.

If you wish to pass this on go ahead just please state Princess kaylin is the one to discover this if you do. I am sure others did do this but have not found any info at all for hours searching the net.

Edit: Correction make sure to do it to 1000 or your codsworth will have sugar bomb treats in his hand instead of whatever he can hold.

And yes figured you solved this already with the other solutions but figured others like me would come here and be hoping for a console one. I am writing a guide on steam for it now too.

Thank, I just disable DLC and CC then reinstalled dlc when I am ready for it. Yes, it's been long time since I post this.
