Fusion Core confusion? Where are they?

So my original fusion core that my power armor came with dies. I made it back to red rocket and left it there. I stored the empty core in my workbench. I noticed that I have 50 "fusion cells" in my inventory that I already collected. I thought those would power the core. Anyways. I go back to red rocket and the core is gone from my stored inventory. Did a raider take it? My question is how do I power my armor back up and keep it powered?

I've also found it useful to have my extra fusion cores carried by a companion so that I can choose when I want to use them (also so that I can move unpowered frames back home with fast travel without eating into a 100% core just by entering a frame).

Though I don't do this so much with my main character, both because I've already taken most of the free frames you can find, and because I've got Curie backing me up with Aeternus (which has a really odd way of using fusion cores).

Actually fusion cores are the ammo for the gatling laser, so the confusion is understandable. In the area closest to Sanctuary there are several fusion power cores. The closest is the molerat cave under the Red Rocket. There is one lying next to the sentry bot at the robot junkyard to the northeast. If you turn on the sentry bot and make it self destruct (using the tape) there are two more. There is one at radio station Olivia. There is half of one in Concord (it's down to 50% when you find it. There is one at Starlight Drive In. And there is one in the set of power armorr in the lake near the drive in.

Later on you'll find them all over the place. I once found three in a Gunners strongbox after I killed the two Gunners. This was a mess, because I was playing urvival mode and cores weigh 4 pound each in that mode. And I was pushing my weight limit. I opened the locker right next to it, and there were three more. I started quickly dropping non essentials, because you never say "no" to a power core.

When you get the Gatling Laer you'll see why you never say no to a power core. The Gatling Laser can be upgraded to three chargin laser barrels that do 150+ points of damage per shot. One fusion core provides 500 shots for a Gatling Laser, one of the most overpowered weapons in the game.

Note as well that the large number of shots from each core effectively gives the gatling laser the cheapest ammunition in the game.
