Starting Far Harbor first time...suggestions/tips before going in?
Title says it all.
I know I need the generic selection of food, chems, armor and wepons but something tells me I'll have to travel a bit light for all that I'll find in this new place. Let me know below.
Also is Nick the only companion I can bring with me? I have a mod installed that lets Dogmeat stay with me a permanent companion.

Have a good supply of Stims and RadAway until you get used to the place. Explore everything, it's a great DLC and my fav in the game.

It was fun, I traveled light as well, one weapon and a small stock of ammo. found enough to make two trips when I was done. the very first place you ge to has traders so initial safety isn't an issue. and ya, til your used to the fog some rad-x and radaway. also if you are doing a survival run like I did then expect LOTS of legenary critters.

I take Piper. Take anyone, or go solo. There are several merchants and doctors.

You can take any companion you want to, but Nick Valentine has some history with one of the Far Harbor residents and there is some extra dialog available if he's with you.
Combat is ramped up a bit. I like it a lot. :)

The Visitor's Guide to Far Harbor

Hello there, we'd like to graciously welcome you to Fah Hahbah!

Visit our Fishing Lodge!
Try delicious home-made food that would feed a'n entire pack of molerats!
Explore an all-natural island with lots of unique critters you won't find anywhere else!
Just watch out for the fog!

Quick Start-Up Guide:
  • - Don't worry about the fog, It has nothing on the Sierra Madre and it barely has any radiation
  • - The only creatures you should worry about are the Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh Yeah Mr.™ KRABS!™, discount Skyrim Charus's, and mutated lizards that are on the island, otherwise you'll be fine
  • - You can bring any companion you want, Nick is the only one with unique dialogue, but the dlc also has its own companion if you want to go alone
  • - You needn't worry about stimpaks and radaway, the fog as stated before isn't something to worry about, but about 8 or 9 stimpaks would suffice depending on your level and difficulty, in which case if you're a lower level on very hard or survival you'll be in trouble.

I'd carry along some good close range weapons, like shotguns or melee stuff. You'll encounter a lot of enemies that like to get up in your face. Maybe bring Strong? And yeah, travel light, 'cause there's some absolutely fabulous stuff that's really heavy.

Thank you all so much for the honest tips!
I plan to bring Grognak's Axe, my Shotgun, Plasma 10mm Pistol and the rare find of a Resolute Lever-Action Rifle (ie slows time momentarily as the last round is chambered) that came with all the fixins! After all the Lever-action rifle was introduced in Far Harbor so I assume its ammo is abundant there.
As for amor I've been told its pretty much pointless to take power armor with you (yay/nay on this?) So I plan to wear a mish-mash of various legendary medium armor parts over my standard Vault suit.
I was also told that its a waste of time to collect any crafting junk while there unless you have a secure spot to store it as it will just weigh you down? Confirm?

Any other tips are still welcome!

actually, you can hop back to home base from FH map with 2 clicks, so I do that when I'm full, 'cos I collect junk for modding guns and robots. Or, you can store it at your FH base.
