Fallout 4

Slow performance with GTX 1080 TI (even slower than my 980m)
So I’ve recently purchased a new machine (specs below) and I have no problems getting a constant 60 FPS on ultra settings for most AAA games (AC Origins, Wolfenstein 2, Doom, Skyrim, GTA V, etc.) but for some strange reason Fallout 4 is running kinda slow (no matter what settings I have). Playing at 1080P during the start of the game (when you have to rush inside the vault) it constantly drops to the 40’s and when I hit Goodneighbor same thing. I’ve tried lowering Godrays, Shadow Distance and even putting it on low settings @ 1080P and it still drops (on low it drops to the 50’s). However, on my gaming laptop with a GTX 980M it has no drops whatsoever (1080P on High), almost a constant 60FPS in those same locations. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? One thing to note, Fallout 4 is not installed on my SSD, however none of my other games are (with the exception of AC Origins) and I’m not having any performance issues with them. Thanks for any help.

Desktop Specs:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti with 11GB GDDR5X
16GB 2666MHz, DDR4
Intel Core i7 8700
256 GB SSD + 2TB 7200RPM

Laptop Specs:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M with 4GB GDDR5
16GB 1600MHz, DDR3L
Intel Core i7 4710HQ
1TB 7200RPM

Obviously something is wrong on that desktop if it's not performing for Fallout 4. If all the other games are just fine, it could be a bad Fallout 4 install. My brother had to re-install the game 3 times to get it running well and I have no clue what screwed up the first 2 installs. I've heard other people with similar tales of bad F4 installs, so it seems to happen somehow. Check your drivers. Oh and make sure you didn't accidentally install the HD Texture pack on the desktop. It's easy to do and the textures are not optimized at all.... of course, with that machine, I'd expect it to run ultra with HD Texture pack just fine.

SSDs mostly just affect load times unless you're running out of memory and the game has to keep pulling stuff from the disk.

Hey thanks for the reply. Quick question, how would I determine if the HD Texture pack is install and how would I go about uninstalling it?

The textures should run without issues (I'm using them with a 1070).

But just uncheck it in your dlc's.

Haven't tried that yet.

You have a very beefy PC, I have about the same specs but a 7700K instead so yours is abit better. Without mods there is no way you ever should go below 60 FPS ever, even on ultra. Godrays are the ultimate FPS killer in this game but you already said that you put them to low.

Check your system with external programs just to see if everything is running correctly like CPU-Z and GPU-Z, you can also download 3Dmark from steam (I think there is a free version) which you can benchmark your system with just incase.

It helps if others know what "Steam" detects as to your h/w configuration. You may know your h/w (you will be surprised how many times the Steam specs are different) but that does not help us help you.

Yep I downloaded the free 3DMark, ran the Time Spy demo and got solid results.

Wrong video card selected for game it appears.

Primary VRAM: 1024 MB
Supported MSAA Modes: 2x 4x 8x

which would be:

Video Card:
Driver: Intel(R) UHD Graphics 630
DirectX Driver Name: nvldumd.dll
Driver Version: 22.20.16.4758
DirectX Driver Version: 23.21.13.8831
Driver Date: 8 2 2017

not your dedicated GPU. Are you selecting "Power Saving?" Don't.

"Video Card:" should be followed by your dGPU.

Update your 1080Ti drivers. Do a clean install, so use DDU (display driver uninstaller) or nVidia's tool on their website to wipe old driver and clean install.

Delete FO4pref.ini and FO4ini (not the FO4custom.ini) Google their locations if necessary.

Start Steam. launch.

Woah. 40fps on ultra with integrated graphics is impressive.

Oh Wow! Just changing it from Power Saving to Balanced seems to have fixed things (I feel like such a fool) thanks a bunch MageThis.

Shadow distance is a performance killer in this game. Try lowering them to med or high.

Turning controller rumble somehow improved my performance.

Your setting should be "PERFORMANCE" so your 1080TI does not throttle under heavy load.

After choosing "Performance" relaunch and repost specs, please.
