DLCs.. When do they come into play?
So, I've had Fallout 4 for a while now, but with so many other games taking up my time I still haven't managed to play it all the way through. I just picked it up again and started a new game, but then started wondering about when the DLCs come into play.

If I want to pick up all of the DLCs during the sale coming up next week, should I wait to start a new game? Or, would I not progress far enough in the meantime to warrant waiting for the sale?

Basically, I am asking at what point in the storyline/leveling process are each of the DLCs accessible, and when is the best time to have them available? I have no issue with waiting until next week to start, and I can play something else in the meantime. Just trying to get the fullest experience possible out of the game, since I tend to not replay these types of games too often.

Thanks.

You can do DLC's at anytime in the game but half the DLC is for the workshop so I would start a new game and gather up materials if you're into settlement building. Otherwise, you could just start a new game and play until you get the DLC as you can do them at any time.

3 Main DLC and Vault-tec DLC:
1st, Vault-tec ~
Huge Time sink, offers more building and is a fair ways past Diamond City, South of it.
I say this first since you need alot of materials and your settlements linked together reaching it is an almost must have to enjoy it fully. Plus you get a much better source of Electricity with this DLC
2nd. Automatron ~
Very early on, eye bots spawn and events trigger. But honestly can be tackled at any time or any lvl, higher levels give more challenge so say when you Reach Diamond City.
3rd. Far Habor ~
You need Valentine, So a fairways past after reaching Diamon City, since you're heading horizontally across the map for that DLC, You'd be doing a whole lotta settlements and Side missions like Cabot Family.
4th. Nuka World ~
You can take it early on, before Diamond City for a very hard challenge, the starting area will chew you up fast before traveling to Nuka World. But That I feel is something you tackle after you've gotten the Castle and started a proper network of settlements so you are ready when you decide to go Full Nuka World and carry it over to the Commonwealth.

Everything else can be taken at anytime, and all offer ease of life gameplay.

Well the two big DLC (Nuka World and Far Harbor) recommends you to be a certain level regardless. I know Nuka World doesn't kick in until you're like level 30. Everything else is base building. They add some neat features but nothing terribly exciting.

It's probably best if you're going to get the two story based DLCs (Nuka World and Far Harbor) to have your character be at least 20-25. A lot of tough challenges in those DLCs.

Thanks guys. Looks like I will just go ahead and start my new game.

When the Automatron DLC kicks in around level 18, stay away from it. Think it's level 18. Unless you are prepared, veteran and looking for a significant challenge you do not want to touch this til around level 25-30 or so. Fun DLC, just vicious.

3rd. Far Habor ~
You need Valentine
You won't get the radio broadcas/mapmarker until you have helped Nick, but you can walk over there and start the quest anytime you want.

I got the Automatron broadcast at Level 15 and the Vault-Tec Workshop broadcast at Level 20.

Sounds right. The Vault Tec can get pretty nasty as well, so go with some power behind you. Getting into it isn't too bad, but the interior gets downright ferocious in a couple spots once you've gotten further into it.

Yeah Vault 88 is a great place for Deathskull Radscorpions.
