Companions hack computers?
I’m terrible at computer hacking, so I don’t waist Perks on it, but I feel like I’m missing out on stuff.
Can’t you tell your companions to do it? Can any of them?

What do you mean by “you’re terrible at computer hacking”?

Most can hack, with varying skills.

I mean I can never figure out the password, so I just hit random words until I get lucky, or tired of trying.

Thats what everyone does. Just upgrade to the max hacking perk and you don’t get locked out.

If I always take Nick, will I ever need to put Perks into hacking?

Nick Valentine can hack computer terminals. Cait loves to pick locks.

I think anyone can try but those two companions are pretty good at the skills they talk about.

As for hacking terminals, you could get better at it if you chose. It isn't difficult. It's like a math trick...you know how some kids just breeze through things that others struggle with? Sometimes it's because they are just that smart but usually it's because they happen to know a handry trick or two.

I'm guessing you also don't like reading, so I'll try to keep this short(er than usual).

How to hack a terminal every time.

Find the first word in the list. Click on it.
Go to the second word on the list and spell out the first word as you hover over each letter.
If it matches the criteria given, click on the second word.
If not, go to the third word, etc.

The first click tells you how many letters are in the correct positions. Usually that's between 0 and 3. It doesn't matter which letter(s), it just lets you know whether you can rule out the next choice or not. Say you're looking for a word that shares one of the same letters. The next word also happens to end with "ed"...that would make two shared letters and that cannot be your word. So you move on.

Out of a thousand tries, I've only run out of options once or twice and that's always because I wasn't paying attention. C-A-R-R-O-T...nope, can't work; C-A-R...nope, can't work; C...nope; C-A-R-R-O-T...ooh, that works.

It's about that hard.

No it isn't.

If your into mods, get Heather, she starts out being able to hack novice terminals, but she learns. So after haching a few novice, she can then hack advanced and so on.

Well, there's no sense in putting yourself down. I was trying to point out that it isn't about being smart or dumb...if you can read my comments, you can hack any terminal.

The only "skill" you need is to be able to spell the same word several times.

Don't wrap your self-worth up in it. Random works well enough too but in the long run, I bet that takes even more time.

As long as you're having fun, that's the important part.

To add on, when you get a 0, that's very handy because then you know if any of the letters match on subsequent words, it can't be it. Especially so on the harder level terminals becuse most of the words are going to have a match.

I admit it was a bit confusing at first when I first learned the system in FO3, but after 3 games it's super super easy.

I've found it's easier to just look at the right side where the words line up. The highlighted word will be just under the last one you used and you can just glance at both quickly to see if any letters line up in their respective positions.
