Fallout 4
Leading by example
So I picked up this Brotherhood of Steel quest called "Leading By Example," which requires me to escort a squire to a location and clear it of hostiles.

Cool. I can do that.

So I set off on my journey, eager to complete my task and fulfill the dreams and desires of my squire. But then, upon eventually reaching my destination (which was off the map, to the North, next to someplace called the Nakano Residence), I ran into a dead end. I talked to the parents inside the home, who told me to go find their daughter, which was something I was willing to do. But the game was like "Nah, you want to do this? Well, too bad. We're not going to update your quest log, you fool."

So then I'm like "Well okay. I can't do that quest apparently, because the game doesn't recognize it as one. I'll just continue with my escort mission."

So I wander over to the quest marker, which is on some boat. And I press everything I can, all over the place. All the buttons; all the switches; every floor panel; each window pane; the ceiling; everywhere. And I finally figure out that I unable to interact with anything inside this boat, despite the game seemingly CONVINCED that I am supposed to do something here.

Is all this intended design, or is this yet another series of incredible design bugs by the wonderful and competent programmers at Bethesda, who can do no wrong?

Nakano residence is not one of the possible locations for that quest.

You have the wrong quest activated or followed the wrong marker.
That's because the quest target you have is in the DLC area, maybe. Nakano residence is the gateway to the DLC area and the boat is the means of travel.

You'd have to talk with the Nakano family and start the DLC to get access to it (you'd be able to use the boat then) and then after you travel there you'll be able to get to the *real* quest target.

I am 100 percent sure that the quest I have activated is called "Leading by example" and I am 100 percent sure that the location it is leading to is the boat next to the Nakano Residence.

Is the DLC supposed to start when I talk to them? Or is there something I was supposed to do before talking to them. Because talking to them and agreeing to find their daughter gives me no quest update.

I'm also level 40, if level restrictions are, for some reason, a factor here.
Yeah, just talk to them and then the father says something to the lines, "take the boat is already set up with some navigation system that'll take you straight to Far Harbor"... or something like that :P ...and then you can use the boat.
This is the quest that kicks off Far Harbor.

The game sometimes assigns radiant quests in undiscovered areas, which is exactly what happened to you. Unless you want that annoying little squire hanging out with you for a while, I'd load a previous save and NOT take "Leading by Example" until you've unlocked FH.
You have to talk to both of them, in turn... and investigate clues around the house first. Listen to some tapes and after the reveal, they'll talk to you again.
Ah okay. Thanks, guys. This information helps a lot.
Don't fret too much if you can't get to the place quickly... The DLC area is big and I don't recommend rushing it :)

Once you're there you're free to come and go using the boat or just using fast travel (just click in the icon Commonwealth on the Far Harbor map.)

Good luck :)

And PS: If you're intend on going through the DLC, I'd mildly suggest taking Nick with you *hint* *hint* :) No spoilers, just saying :P

Am I cool with just going to the BOS quest location, clearing it, and then going back to the mainland, without spoiling anything? I want to leave Far Harbor content for later, but am kind of worried about spoiling it for myself now, by even going there like this... :steamsad:
Hmmm... depends on how much RP/common sense violation are you willing to tolerate, I'd say...

Once you get there, you're kinda stuck in there "story-wise" at least[1], unless you're really flexible on what makes sense, in-world/story wise... as in, it doesn't make sense to get back to the commonwealth, and you cannot ignore the initial steps of the quest once you arrive :L

All of this is IMO, of course.

[1] But, as I said before, gameplay-wise nobody forces you to stay there and you can totally ignore everyone and decide to leave for later... don't remember if the dialogue gives explicit options for that, though.
