Yep, It's Unkillable
Having reached level 61 on the side of the BOS, and being the new Sentinel, I set out out find if there was any way to kill Liberty Prime. I brought along my favorite toys, namely a fully upgraded gauss rifle and a fully upgraded gatling laser with charging barrels. After about 100 rounds from the gauss rifle, having absolutely no effect, I switched to the gatling laser rifle at virtually point blank range. I burned through an entire fusion core. Not only did it do no damage but Prime appeared not to notice it. It didn't even shoot back.

Oh well, I wanted to finish this playthrough with a bang, but I guess it's not to be. I'll return to my retreat in the waters off Spectacle Island, and retire another character.

Well, liberty prime is listed as "Essential" here, so... you couldn't kill it if you were able to do damage on it anyway.

I suspect that since it really only becomes a 'character' in the game when you run BOS it's not meant to be a bullet sponge for YOUR weapons.

If you want to destroy Liberty Prime I suggest orbital laser. :steamhappy:

Only way to fight liberty prime proper is the side with the Minutemen. First, play through the game as BOS until Liberty Prime is activated, then finish the game with the Minutemen. (You may have to force yourself to be removed from the Brotherhood by killing an important NPC.

Once that is done, complete the game as the Minutemen, and "With our Powers Combined" should trigger, destory the Prydwyn, this however will not kill LIberty Prime who should be wandering around the Airport. Prime is now Non-Essential, and killable. He has over a Million Hitpoints and inflicts 10,000 Damage with a high-accuracy Laser. Have fun.

Like Swan, he Regenerates immediately if left idle, so sneak-attack spam doesn't really work. The moment you register as Hidden, his HP is restored.

It is doable, as the laser has no splash (its easy to make it hit pixels while you shoot mininukes at it).

Mininukes are not particularly effecitve, your best bet is to strafe with an obscene high DPS weapon, like a Two-Shot automatic plasma rifle. It will take around 800 rounds to kill him.

I used a cannon myself, its more fun to have explosions rather than just eat it alive.

why don't they use this approach when deciding who is essential or not essential. Like make it so you need to pump 10000 points of damage into Preston before he goes down. That way it is very unlikely that any npc can be accidentally killed by some random world event.

I am sure that watching Preston play the game for you (why bother shooting anyone when Preston's insane health pool will eventually wear down any enemy?) would be very exciting. Kinda makes you wonder why they bothered implementing combat at all when you just want to watch Preston clumsily kill a million raiders.
