Have you found Trashcan Carla? She's a wandering merchant who often visits Sanctuary. You can also find other vendors out in the wilds. If in doubt, go find Diamond City. You can sell stuff there.
Happy exploring!
Bunker Hill, Drumlin Diner, Diamond City, and Trashcan Carla are the main shops, if you base yourself in Sanctuary or that area.
Diamond City is part of the central section, just south of a river as well IIRC.
They simply happen to be hard to find in the early game.
Before long, you'll not only know of several different places to buy and sell things, you'll have numerous options for using your junk for resources to build stuff. You'll be setting up your own shops, running trade caravans, making alliances, and all the rest.
In the early game, when I'm worried about encumbrance, I like to dump stuff in temporary caches and then pick it up on my way out. Crates and things will respawn after a while so you are talking chances when you do that (never dump stuff you really want in a random container).
Once you start getting settlements going, none of this will be much of a concern anymore.
Eleanor near Freeline hills Estate.
Carla will show up in Sanctuary Hills once you've gotten there and established the settlement. Buy and sell from her, and chat with her to be put on the right track for Diamond City. Goodneighbor also has Kleo and Daisy to trade with.
Also, once you get rolling, you can put stores in your settlements, and trade with them as well as the wandering merchants.
