Heres a tip for where to find food for the Sanctuary quest

Abernathy Farm is literally a Mini Nuke throw away from Sanctuary. Being you can steal their crops without getting in trouble. Plus you can get a quest while you're there to attend to later without having to go back there just to get the quest.

It's actually within compass range of Sanctuary itself so it's super easy to find just south across the water, and over the hill, and viola.
