Game seemingly got a memory leak?
So as title says, my game seems to have gotten a memory leak or something. Like I can be playing with the ram around like 4-5gb then I notice the game get laggy at some random point(frames drop) and check my overlay(msi afterburner) and suddenly the game is using around 8,100mb of ram and game crashes.
Could dlc cause it? Because recently bought the season pass because it was on sale and been waiting for it and installed the vault dlc and the contraptions dlc, was able to play for hours before without anything happening other than the common random broken textures after some random amount of time.

No mods. Only dlc currently installed: vault tec workshop, contraptions workshop

Pc info -
OS: Windows 7 pro
Cpu: i5 6600k, stock clock
Gpu: Radeon rx 470 4gb
Ram: Ballistix 8gb 2400 ddr4, single stick

The game will use more Ram as you play and your saves get larger as a result of all that you do in the game. Another 8GB Ram would do you a world of good. And not just for FO4.

With that CPU & GPU I suggest keeping Shadow Distance on medium, Godrays and Weapon Debris off.

Because you have an AMD GPU, if you ever decide to mod the game you might want to look at Shadow Boost and other performance mods on nexus.

The issue though is that the problem was non existent until I installed those dlc packs :/ even the broken textures seem to pop up quicker, yesterday restarted and broken textures were back after everything was loaded. And the ram is fine until it just suddenly decides to skyrocket for no known reason, I had another stick but it was doa but feel another stick isn't going to help much except with one game I play(just cause 3, has memory leak and needs 16+ gb :l ).
I usually have my osd on so I can see my temps and what's going on with my system, sticks around 5gb or less until it randomly shoots up and crashes the game, and vram sticks around 2.5 or less on max settings at 1080p.

And not planning on using any mods, but if I do I'll use those. Thanks. Wanted to get create settlements anywhere and achievement enabler and better lights(98% of defaults suck and are apparently cosmetic), but see so many issues with mods like broken saves and other issues I just never used them. Plus been told they need a new game with no saves
The dlc adds a lot more to the game, so resource usage will be more.

Now you have robots, more raiders, new monsters, ect.

More ai calculations, more random combat going on so yeah not surprised that it takes more ram.

Running in a single stick configuration isn't dong you any favors in this game.

And finally 8gb is the minimum.
And let's not forget you're running minimum ram in subpar configuration.

Final conclusion= more or better configured ram.

It has been my experience over the years that once you use more than 50% of the available RAM on your machine it will start to slow down. I currently run 32 GB of RAM and on a heavy day I can use 15 GB. Hence why I use 32 GB to maintain maximum speed on my all SSD machine. PS. I run SQL databases on my machine besides games which is why I use so much RAM and I give my machine a stress test every day.

Yeah but I only installed the vault and contraptions dlc so no bots or anything yet. And like I've said, it just comes on suddenly, not over time so doesn't seem like extra content in the game eating stuff up.
Seems more like a certain thing breaks the game at some point, but can't seem to be able to recreate it on command. At first thought was building since it crashed when building and placed some dlc lightning, but rebuilt and didn't happen again. Yesterday happened after starting my ammo factories and ran across spectacle island to check on other stuff, but couldn't recreate it.

I've been meaning to get another 8gb stick for other games, got one but was doa and still need to get to buying another to replace it. This game only uses up 5gb or so until it just randomly spikes to 8,100mb and crashes.

I've hit 20GB of ram useage with FO4
All DLC's/ultra settings/high res textures & a few mods.

Isnt a leak due to the fact the memory gets released, even when the game is still running.
Its just a resource hog of a game.

As ÐÜÐĘŞåܩʙ pointed out, 8GB is the minimum for the game.
Only having one stick dont help either, populate all RAM slots you have available.

Maybe memory leak wasn't the best word for it, I was still waking up lol. It's more of a issue of some type that is tied to ram, my ram usage sits at around 5gb until at some random amount of time it just spikes to 8,100mb of ram and crashes.
I've only got vault and contraptions dlc installed currently and no mods so game isn't using a lot of ram.
So basically my ram usage is going from 5gb used to suddenly spiking over 8gb causing the game crash

Am planning on getting another 8gb stick though for other games that cause my ram to sit at 90%, already got a 2nd but was sadly doa so need to buy a replacement.

You have your PF set too high then. RAM shouldn't be impacting performance unless you start paging and/or have another bottleneck somewhere else.

The fact that you committed the utter disgrace of using single channel memory on a supposedly gaming-purpose PC isn't going to help you any, either, particularly on the one game that aggressively answers to memory speed improvements.

Join up DDR4's generally atrocious latency, your RAM's average clock speed to single channel operation (read/write/seek on one stick only), your results can only be horrible. In fact, that single channel RAM is your PC's worst weakness, by far and wide. Buy yourself another identical stick of RAM and your machine's performance will substantially increase in every single kind of workload.
Yet on ultra my ram usage is sitting at 5gb...

And I did buy another stick but it was doa, need to buy another.

Fallout 4 does have memory leaks, but they shouldn't happen very often, and result in a crash shortly after the game starts to use the Pagefile. If you keep getting memory-leak like behavior, you should MEMTEST86 your RAM and check for errors, it's possible your memory is defective and continues to retain data when it should be dumping it.

the amount of content in the game is irrelevant, it does not load the entire game at once, ever.
theres a 'garbage collection' function which clears a held cache of data periodically but its not very good.
the only real workaround is more ram unfortunatly but tbh, most games these days will chew through 8gb without blinking. it is a good idea to double it
I'm curious at what kind of ram it is, since one was doa there's a good chance the other one is crappy also.

Do you have a web link to the exact ram? I hope you didn't cheap out on ram type.

Please don't say you installed the texture dlc if you have delete it it's 60gb textures are not even improved much only with a damn microscope.Just use a mod for that and it will make you game run like ♥♥♥♥ if you use that dlc just saying.

Texture DLC shouldn't even be considered by someone that has a mainstream processor. It's why it doesn't look any better.

So how high up is a 4770-K i would say the low of high end still looks like ♥♥♥♥.

I7-K's are the top end of mainstream. Or perhaps what I would call Entry-level high end if you're willing to overclock them and have a supported platform.
