If what you intend is to complete this quest without becoming enemies withe the Institute, one way is to deceive the courser telling you came on behalf of SRB to check on the situation, but yeah, you can, too, kill every enemy stealthly without repercussions with the Institute.
Sorry, didn't bother to read the last paragraph.
Sneak in Fallout 4 works like in previous Elder Scrolls and Fallouts: there is a marker in the center of screen that shows how visible you are to enemies, the closer the brackets are to the center, the more likely you are from being detected. The likeliness of your character to be detected is determined by light level, weight of armor and moving speed. Using silenced weapons or attacking while in sneak mode gives you a damage multiplier bonus, that can be boosted with perks and other abilities.
There are three states:
- 'Hidden' indicates you are completely invisible to all entities nearby (including non-enemies);
- 'Detected' means entities are aware of your presence but no enemies are nearby;
- 'Caution' means enemies are investigating but are not yet aware of your presence;
- 'Danger' means enemies have spotted you and are ready to attack;
Enemies do not care about bodies of their friends lying around, but will become suspicious if you do not use silenced weapons or miss shots in their vicinities.
Melee weapons are completely silent, and the power attack key can be used to perform instant kills.
I knew about friendly characters reacting to bodies in public places with special dialogue, but do enemies show the same behavior? That's is new to me, lol.
Here, this is when one raider finds dead buddy. When there're at least two raiders they have a funny chat over it.
EDIT: managed to get group chat!

Oh, I kind of feel ashamed for not paying attention to this touch in over 900 hours of gameplay, LOL. Thank you for the heads up, though.
I know the basics of sneaking but thanks for that. I'm not sure melee weapons are silent though too. Take this example, I sneak up behind someone and stab them with Kremvh's Tooth. It's usually an instant kill. Any other enemies in the area are alerted by something because if I was playing with a HUD it would go to [CAUTION] from [HIDDEN] and turn red. (I prefer to play with my HUD off.) So I don't know is it the body falling onto the floor that makes a noise but even silenced weapons alert nearby enemies.
