ticonderoga mission and stealth - spoilers probably
just wondering if i can do this mission sneaky like. I'm doing the mission for the railroad to kill the courser in the building with all the synths and don't want to alienate myself from the institute because i've yet to decide which faction i will go with.

My character is a real glass cannon. Level 69 but I'm still wearing leather armour albeit shadowed and muffled and am trying to take the synths out one by one without making them hostile. I killed one of them with a sneak attack by closing the door and the rest didn't notice but every other one alerts the whole place.

how does the stealth mechanic work? if I sneak attack an enemy without being spotted surely I shouldn't agro anything else? And I hide the body too? Or is that building classed as one big room so does it have to be a room of its own and is that why the first one died quietly?

If what you intend is to complete this quest without becoming enemies withe the Institute, one way is to deceive the courser telling you came on behalf of SRB to check on the situation, but yeah, you can, too, kill every enemy stealthly without repercussions with the Institute.

Sorry, didn't bother to read the last paragraph.

Sneak in Fallout 4 works like in previous Elder Scrolls and Fallouts: there is a marker in the center of screen that shows how visible you are to enemies, the closer the brackets are to the center, the more likely you are from being detected. The likeliness of your character to be detected is determined by light level, weight of armor and moving speed. Using silenced weapons or attacking while in sneak mode gives you a damage multiplier bonus, that can be boosted with perks and other abilities.

There are three states:
- 'Hidden' indicates you are completely invisible to all entities nearby (including non-enemies);
- 'Detected' means entities are aware of your presence but no enemies are nearby;
- 'Caution' means enemies are investigating but are not yet aware of your presence;
- 'Danger' means enemies have spotted you and are ready to attack;

Enemies do not care about bodies of their friends lying around, but will become suspicious if you do not use silenced weapons or miss shots in their vicinities.

Melee weapons are completely silent, and the power attack key can be used to perform instant kills.

Actually, in FO4 enemies do react to corpses, it doesn't give "caution" status but they have a special dialogue and start running around.

I knew about friendly characters reacting to bodies in public places with special dialogue, but do enemies show the same behavior? That's is new to me, lol.

Here, this is when one raider finds dead buddy. When there're at least two raiders they have a funny chat over it.

EDIT: managed to get group chat!

Oh, I kind of feel ashamed for not paying attention to this touch in over 900 hours of gameplay, LOL. Thank you for the heads up, though.

Well i managed to kill all the synths while keeping the courser friendly so I could deal with him at the end. I know I didn't have to but it made it a bit more interesting. He follows you around the place so you can kill them without him seeing or another synth seeing and it's good. Turns out you can push them into rooms and close the door behind you! I think the whole place was actually a trap but I suppose time will tell.

I know the basics of sneaking but thanks for that. I'm not sure melee weapons are silent though too. Take this example, I sneak up behind someone and stab them with Kremvh's Tooth. It's usually an instant kill. Any other enemies in the area are alerted by something because if I was playing with a HUD it would go to [CAUTION] from [HIDDEN] and turn red. (I prefer to play with my HUD off.) So I don't know is it the body falling onto the floor that makes a noise but even silenced weapons alert nearby enemies.

and Vault Tec Lunchboxes, do you think their noise alerts enemies? What about Activate Radio?

Bells at reception desks appear to alert enemies if you use them, also tin can chimes alert everyone around if you touch those. Many other objects don't alert enemies and hilariously enough grabbing and holding a large object between your character and enemy can effectively be used for avoiding detection.
