Brother James just blew the hell up

So I came across this stage thing or wahtever, with some strangely happy people who want to change the commonwealth back to before things went to ♥♥♥♥. So Brother James told me to follow him. He went into this room, and said "Right this way". Suddenly, everybody in the entire area exploded. The initiates, and Brother James. No explanation, no raiders or anything that actually caused it. Just.. Everyone exploded, except for me and Codsworth.
Can some please explain WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥ just happened?

A vertibird gets shot down and falls directly on top of that camp, it happens so regularly that there are a ton of screenshots and videos of it happening all over the net.

Hope you have a save from pretty close to that point, that camp is part of a pretty good quest line, and you need them alive to do it.

"Pretty good questline", yeah? There aren't any quests in it, it's just "give me your stuff, persuade me not to try to rob you, or kill us all."

Its a quest on another area and you don't really need to reload your save. He will just be replaced by another scam artist.

I'm aware, but that's not that questline, and you don't need him to be alive for that.

It is part of the infamous Emogene takes a Lover quest. Killing him before the quest will just make him respawn for the quest. Bugthesda is horrible at writing scripts liek this.

Like Fred O'Connell who constantly manages to rise form the dead to respawn as a random encounter.

I don't think he respawns, I'm pretty sure that's a different guy. The one you encounter the first time you go there, before the quest, is Brother James. The one for that quest is Brother Thomas.

Do you mean Brother Thomas? Anyways, I love massacring them as part of the Emogene Takes a Lover quest. They're all armed with crap like pool cues and switchblades and such. Hilarious to reject him when he demands for your stuff, then mow them all down. Silly cultists.

I suggest going in full kitted out with Danse at your side. Sure, they can take two heavily-armed people in power armour with knives and sticks.

Brother Thomas was part of Emogene Takes a Lover. If you go there before that, there's a different person known as Brother James. I'm pretty sure you can threaten him by bringing up you killed the last guy if you did it.
