Why do feral ghouls look different from intelligent ones?
I just read the wiki page for ghouls, but I can't find an answer. The wiki says that ghouls heal from low radiation, are immune to moderate radiation and turn feral when exposed to "excessive" radiation, but why does that change the way they look?

Feral ghouls look like they're melting, almost. They have skinny legs and arms but usually large, drooping chins and stomachs, and their faces are drooping too. Even the withered ghouls looks like they have wobbly double chins.
Intelligent ghouls on the other hand have completely humanoid bodies. The skin is charred and stuff, and the face lacks noses and ears, but the shape is human.

Why do intelligent ghouls looks more "dried out" than feral ones, when the feral ones are more irradiated? You'd think it was opposite (that lower radiation would let you retain muscle mass and fat while higher radiation would dry you out and make you stick thin).

Do you like bacon?

Put some bacon on a plate. Put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Yes I said microwave. No you're not going to eat it (this is for science!).

Now get another peice and put it in the microwave for 3 minutes.

They look different?

Because they are feral, the do not consider what they look like. "Normal" ghouls are just people that look different, but they still care what they look like.

This would be a great thesis subject: The Puzzling Taxonomy of Ghouls - Their Forms, Habits and Characteristics.

Or should it be "Zoology"? Probably best to stick with the more neutral "Taxonomy". The intelligent Ghouls might be offended if they were lumped in with Ferals.
Well, the lore explanation is because non-feral ghouls still retain some human characteristics, and are easily distinguishable from feral, rotten, ones.

As for the scientific explanation, I'm not really sure what are the effects of long term ionizing radiation exposure on human tissue/fat/muscles.

Not doing that (because I have no science bacon left and my science budget has been cut) but a quick microwave/bacon googling shows me that the 3 minute bacon is dried up and crispy and the 30 second one is kinda raw. And that's exactly what I said in the post.

Why does more radiation make ghouls look bloated, fleshy and drooping while less makes them look dried up and crusty?

Because this is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game and it was an artistic decision to make then look that way.

Sorry for wanting to talk about a game on the game's forums.

That is basically because in popular culture, radiation is said to mutate creatures and make them grow out of control, ignoring the evolution, LOL. It is not scientifically accurate, but it helps create the atmosphere, compose the lore and make a justification for the presence of monsters in the wasteland.

This is also hilarious, to be honest, lol.

The worst part about a Feral ghoul is when you think about it they are not dead.
They are alive and suffering Horribly.
Every Feral you kill your actualy doing them a favor.

Id guess because the ferels dont look after themselfs. They just wonder around eating whatever they find and huddling up to radioactve barrels.

Where normal ghouls look after themselfs. Maybe get more exersise. Cleaner living and sleeping in beds eating better food.

Its like when yousee a crack head and they are all withered and droopy because they arent looking after themselfs. Thats my theory anyways :)
