Biggest performance impact
I7 7700k
1080ti
32gb RAM

I just built a monster rig, this thing barely breaks a sweat on most games on my 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor.

In Fallout 4, I have the hd textures pack and have every setting at the highest it can go. I also have vsync on and I stay at 60fps most of the time.

However, in some open areas it does dip below at times, which I was very surprised by.

My question: what would you guys say is the biggest graphic setting other than resolution that I can change that has the biggest impact on performance? If you can't pick just one and wanna make a top 3 feel free.

But my goal is to just tweak a couple little things while leaving the game pretty much maxed out at ultra settings. But I don't wanna change a ton bc it looks great, but if I have to I guess I will. But I don't think I should have to with this rig.

Thanks

Godrays, Shadows, and Weapon debris.

Don't know why everybody rags on godrays. My performance isn't affected by them at all?
I only have a 1060 3gb, so...

Also, fallout 4 is going to have fps dips on any system, no matter what. It's not really something you can fix.

I can't argue with that, K r e.....

One thing I can say is, get rid of that bethesda hd texture pack and download some textures off the nexus. That thing is an unneccessary resource hog and the textures aren't even that great. Though, that'll only snag you like 3 fps on your system, I would assume, OP.

It was definitely godrays. I turned them from ultra to medium and have no frame dips now, everything else is ultra and sampling x16.

Thanks for this tip everyone, worked like a charm.

And Kraemer all I can guess is perhaps it's not as big of an issue at 1080p, but at 3440x1440p godrays strain my brand new 1080ti, so there's no way a 1060 is running ultra godrays at 1440p with everything else also maxed out.

Guess so. Forgot to take that into account. Yeah, I'm at 1080p :)

For "most" folk it's godrays and K r e a m-er is just a lucky soab. It all depends on individual hardware and clockspeed balance as to what might help with gaining fps. Anyway, glad you got it sorted, jb.. Have a great game. :-)

this link will be really helpful for anyone looking to optimize Fallout 4 performance. Extensive testing and explanations of all the different things, showing a very easy to understand FPS difference.

Some things I thought mattered a lot, turned out to not matter much at all. And vice versa. Helped me improve my FPS without taking away too much of the good looks. (if you can call it that, I always felt something was just plain wrong with the Fallout 4 graphics and movements etc)

Helped me go from 20-30 FPS with maxed out mod load introducing forests to Fallout 4 instead of a wasteland, and a ton of grass. (1080p 1050Ti Ryzen 7 32GB RAM) to 45-60, depending. Somehow the game won't ever.... EVER go above 60 for me. Which is just stupid.

Sad part is that I'm using an RX 580 and have no FPS drops with all settings maxed but no HD texture pack. Not much point when the "HD textures" don't even look much better.
