If you're on good terms with the Railroad, they will send you to destroy the BoS. Just as the BoS will send you to take out the Railroad.
Also i am 100% sure you can do this. Why? because i do it most of my games.
( Sidenote, my favorite faction is the Minutemen. Yes, shocking ).

At Least on my playthrough he followed That scribe girl to the edge of the Glowing Sea and was killed by a Deathclaw. There was an animation of it picking him up and tearing his arm off so I figured it always happened.
I do not think this was a scripted event that would normally happen. Rhys never died in my Minutemen and BoS playthroughs.
Everyone will die on their own.
Except maybe synths...
