What are the best settings for a GTX 970?
Getting 20 FPS drops and other intermittent graphical hiccups in city areas, so I'm trying to optimize the settings to correct that. I've already turned Godrays to low (they won't turn off in the launcher settings) and reduced the Shadow Distance and Quality. I even changed my NVIDIA card to prioritize performance and started a fresh, vanilla save with all of my mods turned off- there's blurs all over the screen and I'm still an unhappy camper.'

I don't need 60+FPS but dropping down to 10-30 in city areas is getting annoying.

Put up your whole PC stats, this looks like your CPU or RAM is insufficient, as I run a GTX970 at just under Ultra with little/no issues.

I wish it told me Memory speed and if you're operating in Dual Channel or not. FX-8350 isn't great for Fallout 4 but it should give you better performance than what you're getting.

Could be Sound card, I know it sounds stupid, but sometimes Audio devices can create incredible OS latency that results in system slowdown. Try disabling it in Device manager and seeing if performance improves.

same here (ultra with no issues).

Changing my FX-8350 to an i7-6700k allowed to my GTX 970 to run at almost 100% usage and i average around 65fps with high settings + maxed out render distances + FXAA + no motion blur all while running 236 mods and the ReGrowth mod. Only problem i have is once you head into the city i drop to astonishingly low frame rates which is why im getting my GTX 1080 delivered in an hour.

Your CPU is also running at 4GHz, bump it up to around 4.5GHz and you should notice an improvement.

thats actually a good point does this game get 60fps in the demanding city areas on dual channel ram? i know someone mentioned quad channel memory being the best for this kind of game but honestly i just think its got something to do with the CPU and Ram Speed.

isn't quad the minimum requirement?

i had a non k 6700 at the time it could only clock to about 3.8ghz this game needs 4.5ghz for smooth performance especially in those kind of areas. 3000mhz Ram speed benefits alot along with the processor as well.

I run it with everything set to max in 1080p.
FPS drops to 30-35 in complex areas.
GTX 970, 3770K, 2x8GB DDR3-1600 RAM.

you need to overclock the 3770k and get higher speed ram in dual channel and set your godrays to medium. or you can just put the shadow distance to medium instead.

Nah it's fine, I don't mind it, and won't invest more money on this rig. It's still mostly 60fps (CPU: 4.2GHz, 970: 1340/3700MHz)
When it's too low I just use VATS or the bullet-time mod.
Next will be a 8-core Intel though, with quad channel RAM.

The city areas hit the CPU/RAM very hard.... im on a 4790k at 4.7ghz, 16gb ddr3 2400mhz ram and have no issues in the city areas but I know a lot of people with amd cpus and such that do.
