Or walls, for that matter. When attaching to an existing wall, the angle at which the next section is attached seems to be influenced by voodoo.

Its called the rug glitch. There are some videos on youtube to describe it. Basically you put down a rug, put a fence on it, then move the rug and fence together and the fence won't snap and you can move them where you want. It's tricky when you click and on what. Here's a vid where it is explained well.

Edit: Actually, this guy's vids on building tips is pretty good for raised platforms, turret boxes, etc. as well.
