For example, you build an Atrium and make some doors in the walls. To build a Cafeteria, you need to connect a Cafeteria door part to the Atrium from the outside. Other Cafeteria parts will then happily snap to the Cafeteria door part.

Do you know you have power issues because you snapped a vault power connector to a wall and there's no radiant power?
yes, i did.
i always have a wall light next to a conduit to be sure of power..
i found the problem though... every time i get a certain distance away, i have to pick up and place down one of the ultility halls i used in order to get power again, otherwise everything is dead.. so it's poor game design and broken connections not initiated by me..
I haven't had the same issues you have had, so maybe I just have a different combo of things connecting. I had the same issue initially reported due to mixing nursery and atriums and whatever just as I was experimenting; later clean up fixed my issues.
getting power from the initial "150" reactor was somewhat challenging for me, but it did turn out to be proper tile alignment in my case that solved my issues.
