Nuka World - At what point does Preston Garvey hate you
I can imagine some stupid Bethesda game design flaw where just by starting a quest or talking to Gage you initiate the 'Helping raider' status. I hope this only happens when you actually go and attack a settlement (kill everyone and loot, takeover etc.) and if so can you choose not to raid a settlement, like with some negotiation (oh wait negotiation doesn't exist in Fallout 4)

I take the minutemen seriously and wouldn't want to become an enemy due to a thoughtless game mechanic

I stopped doing Raider stuff after chatting with all three bosses, Preston was still OK with me. I took Open Season after that though.

As far as I understand it, until you actually start hitting the Commonwealth, you should be OK with Preston. And there is a mod on Nexus to bypass the Commonwealth raiding, so that you can actually finish Power Play.

You expect Preston to accept any negotiation? most of it make sense but whatever you say dude. I suggest completing main story before doing it or just pick another faction.

He hates you as soon as you have claimed ONE settlement as a raider outpost.

(PS the minutemen will still consider you as their general preston tells you that but he will never forgive you thus never follow you but you still can command over your minutemen and have your..useless millitia)

He also doesn't forgive you for blowing up all the evil scientists in the Institute. Apparently Preston has no idea what goals are. He believes that once he sees an explosion then all problems are solved even if the only reason why we were blowing up the Institute in the first place was to kill the evil scientists. If you alert the evil scientists that you are going to blow up the Institute and tell them that they should port out then you won't kill any of the evil scientists in the explosion. See the evil scientists are evil, so they aren't going to choose to stay behind and be blown up by the explosion while only the good scientists escape. But heavens forbid the game let you bring this up in a conversation with Preston when he gets all pissy at you.

well preston was mad at me since i blew up the institute, but i did the grand tour (the quest where your clear nuka world for the raiders, before killing them all) and he never lost a word about that.

As others have said, he hates you once you claim a single Commonwealth settlement for the raiders, however, this only applies if he's already met you when you do it (you can't break his trust before he even knows you).

Though you're almost certain not to have done it that way, it's possible to do all the raider stuff, then go and meet Preston and have him give you Open Season to turn on them, and he ends up being happy.

But as long as you already have his companion perk and have harvested all the colonial dusters off him that you want, losing the use of him as a direct companion isn't that big of a deal.

You can avoid this using console commands:

Every time you claim an outpost, preston will hate you (permanently), to prevent this:
Before claiming (before placing flag):
1a4d7.removefromfaction a1b85
After claiming (after placing the flag):
1a4d7.addtofaction a1b85 1
This is necessary even if you haven't met preston yet.
I am unsure of how he reacts to forcing settlements to become vassels.

Do note the context of the above information is under the assumption you will not complete Open Season
Nite69 Jan 16, 2017 @ 5:11pm
he starts to hate you after you have I think 2 settlements taken over on the main map

That is categorically wrong and will lead to dissapointment if anyone believes that.

No matter what you do, assuming you want to keep the raiders alive, preston will hate you after ONE settlement is taken, in fact, as soon as the flag is placed. The only way around this is console commands.
Magic Gonads Jan 16, 2017 @ 5:15pm
You do not have to have met him before he hates you! I have tested this twice.
If you don't even meet him and still take a settlement he will hate you. It will still be possible to do the first minuteman quest, but as soon as that is over he will tell you to kill the raiders.

I don't like the Raider concept ,but I can see why Bethesda is catering to those that want to be that way. I play through Nuka-World without raiseing any flags for the gangs. And when Gage becomes my friend and I get his Perk I then elliminate the Raiders compleatly. Never involving NW in the commonwealth.. That way it keeps me in good standing with what ever faction I play in the CW.

no its not wrong, thats the turning point where preston will refuse to work with you is when you start putting raider factions on the main map

Yes, but it's not the unresolvable hatred he has if you've already met him, since at least you have the option to do Open Season and get him back on side).

I just said that I tested this twice, I even provided console commands which negate the effect.
