The settlements that don't produce food or water will get those from your supply line. They won't stock up food or water at any particular settlement, they just eat / drink as they need. As long as they are connected by your supply lines don't worry about it.

You need to have the Local Leader perk. Then enter the build mode, select a settler you want to run the supply line and press Q, then select the target settlement.

Not every settlement needs to be connected to every other, it is a network, just connect them to the network.

You may want to read through this: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_4_settlements
And the rest of the Wikia too, while you are at it.

That usually means the settler you made running the supply line died...

They don't die, your the only person who could kill them.

I have 72 supply lines, nobody ever died.

Thank you so much. Usually I dig for that kind of stuff just by myself, but I don't remember a game being as complicated as F4, the only game I decided to try to solve only one problem a day. Since they are so many, and most of them unintuitive.

Actually Provisioners can be killed. They can be killed via actions you've taken such as by rocket turrets you've placed. I've also lost a provisioner to I don't know what when they were traveling between The Castle and Spectable Island.

Robot provisioners can be killed by just about anything I believe.

Also, what the heck do you need 72 supply lines for? That is a huge waste of settlers.

That is one point of view.

The other point of view is that well equipped and armed Provisioners can act as a kind of a militia patrol network and can often stand their ground quite well against what the Commonwealth tries to send against them. If they are defeated, they recover after a while (provided that you did not shoot/blow them up yourself) and carry on fighting, eventually defeating the enemies and resuming their task.

As a bonus, if you are near the fight, you get XP for their kills too.

I already said that you can kill a provisioner.

72 supply lines, a waste of settlers, just lol, it's just something I can do in the game, I have them going everwhere, Far Harbour, Nuka World, human and robot provisioners, so what, does it bother you.

And I have never seen any of them die ever, including robot ones, I don't use rocket turrets, but I do use laser ones.

I have watched them from a distance fight enemies when I meet them on their travels, they might get downed for a while, but they don't die, I have not equiped any with armour, many still have basic pipe pistols, although the robotic ones are pretty tooled up.

Vanilla game btw.

This is actually a unique idea, it gives you your own MM force of 72 out in the field. I only lost one in the hours I've played, and that's because I accidently killed him with a grenade, I've seen them get absolutely brutalized at times, but they only take a knee, then get back up and continue on. Maybe not very realistic, but can you imagine trying to keep supply lines running if they could get killed (they aren't the brightest bulbs on the string to begin with)? I always arm my provisioners with the best spare weapons/armor that I have.

Fun scouting the provisioners, sometimes. Learned some cool routes and get to watch then engage in firefights along their supply line. Give them excellent h/w including 1 plasma or fragment grenade. Nuka-grenades will be their next upgrade.
