Subway Steward Protectron
These guys have always been weird and glitchy, but something particularly stupid is happening with one I just found. I interact at the right time, and it takes my token, but then it attacks me anyway. What the hell?

It's a 200 year old robot. It's a miracle that it can even boot up, and it's bound to be malfunctioning in some way.

Pretty much this. Sometimes they take your tokens and are peaceful, other times they take your tokens and still see you as an intruder. And then sometimes you do something to cheese them off after you've paid your token.

For example, I paid the token to the one at Corvega plant (after giving it subway personality), and it was all hunky dory until I took out a turret, and then it turned on me. Because all protectrons are allied to all turrets.

What... they take tokens?

If you have a Subway Token on you and give it to them when they ask for it, they (ARE SUPPOSED TO) fight on your side. However, the mechanic is inconsistent at best.
I have successfully gotten one to work correctly once.

Why do you think they are supposed to? Nothing in the game tells you that. Not even the wiki says that, even though it is not canon. It says they request it, but does not say they become your friend or fight on your side.

Because it's worked before?
They take tokens from you if you give them one, and doing that is supposed to make them non-hostile to you, while remaining hostile to any enemies they come across. It's worked before, but it's not very consistent.
It's similar to how Police Protectrons won't attack you if your weapon is holstered, and you can exploit them to kill enemies for you.
I suppose 'fight on your side' wasn't the best wording. They don't necessarily become your ally, they just don't aggro on you. Neglecting to give them a token turns them hostile.

Did you have another token on your character after giving it the first one or was that your only subway token? I am pretty sure that the robot is hostile to any character without a subway token in its inventory so once you've given it your token you now have no token in your inventory and are considered hostile.

I have like 60 of them.
