For example, I paid the token to the one at Corvega plant (after giving it subway personality), and it was all hunky dory until I took out a turret, and then it turned on me. Because all protectrons are allied to all turrets.
I have successfully gotten one to work correctly once.
They take tokens from you if you give them one, and doing that is supposed to make them non-hostile to you, while remaining hostile to any enemies they come across. It's worked before, but it's not very consistent.
It's similar to how Police Protectrons won't attack you if your weapon is holstered, and you can exploit them to kill enemies for you.
I suppose 'fight on your side' wasn't the best wording. They don't necessarily become your ally, they just don't aggro on you. Neglecting to give them a token turns them hostile.
