The contraptions DLC is fine but they could of done so much more with it.
(And for people with the "But I don't want to use mods" logic - yeah. Buying a manson but only using two rooms ... that's the same level of imbecility.)

That's the thing, it is about as reliable as buying ammo from vendors, because in the end I still have to buy the lead and fertiliser from the vendors.
I use a scrapping mod that allows me to scrap plants and bodies in settlements so I never have issues with fertilizer, lead can be problematic without shipments but hitting the gyms found in the world (I know there is one in that robot shopping plaza, and another in downtown Boston at least) should give you plenty.
