Why are the outfits so ugly?
The outfits, armor, undersuits what have you are all ugly. There are none that don't make me feel like I'm a Raider, Gunner, Farmer or an extra from Mad Max. Outside of mods the only decent outfits are worn by importaint NPC's or companions, it's maddening.
Sorry had to vent, enjoy your day. :steamhappy:
Edit: I should have stated that it's more or less the lack of varying colours and textures that bother's me the most about clothes in Fallout 4, also the inability to add ballistic weave or put armor over certain clothing items.
Edit 2: I am loving all these comments, they're a laugh riot! XD

Welcome to the horror of the post-apocalypse! Though you mentioned raiders and extras from Mad Max as if they're separate, while in my experience they're pretty much the same thing.

Pre-war clothes generally look a bit nicer (mostly clean suits and laundered dresses), but I usually end up wearing whatever fits underneath armour.
A today game wouldn't be anything without the mods. And the first people thinking that way are probably the game designers themselves. Less work to do, or more money to make, your choice...

Because the thread for clothing and all the materials for armor are over 200 years old.

You can download raider overhaul mod and a lot of clothing armor mods from the nexus.

Why so ugly? Because war is ugly and you need to dress for the occasion. It's the most basic rule in fashion.

Just because the end of the world happened shouldn't mean I can't look fabulous darling.

I'm sure you look just as pretty dead as when you're alive.

The world has been devestated for over 200 years, lets put on our best brand new silk shirts folks. Sure most people have been busy trying to survive and all, but thats no reason for us to give up what really matters in life, looking faaaaaabulous.

Instead of complaining about outfits being ugly (to you), you should instead be asking why there are so few variations of clothing in the world. Not everyone would be wearing the same checkered shirt and jeans you know. It wouldnt have hurt bethesda to add a couple dozen different shirts to go with a couple dozen different pants. The artists are typically the first to be done with thier jobs, thats why most dlc tends to be outfits in other games, it gives the art team something to do with all their free time.

Obviously, only a few companies made clothing from fibres with a 200-year guarantee, so those are the only clothes that remain.

I'd like if they'd include even some basic colour variation, though. There really shouldn't need to be entirely separate items just to produce different colours of exactly the same suit.

I suppose that's what I should have written instead of ugly, the lack of variations in colours and textures is what's really annoying, because in the end everyone just ends up looking the same. Apocolypse or not, it's rather boring.

It's been 200 years, be surprised there's clothing from the pre-war to begin with.

Ikr? looking toats fab in the post-apocalypse is the most importin thing dahling! Seriously though, that makes sense and is certainly more my problem, outside of using mods (I have bad experiences with mods so I don't use them (woe-is-me D: )) that what bothers me about Fo4 and Skyrim (maybe not so much Skyrim but it is a similar issue) is the lack of variation in colours and textures. I really wish we'd get a clothing DLC but I don't see it happening. :-/

No. One can look fabulous in anything with just the right smile and a good body. It ain't about the cloths, girls. Get it wrong and you'll look like an over-dressed troll.

FInd one thing and note another.

Find a working washing machine.

Note the color of Commonwealth dirt...
