Best Companion for Building?
I'm currently working on building up my settlements, and I wanodered, who is the best companion to have with you when building stuff? When I say 'best' what I'm referring to is affinity.

I've noticed with Preston I get a slow and steady amount, but is it better for any others?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but, building does not raise your affinity with a companion. Here's the wiki page for affinity.

I'm pretty sure it does. Before I went to build my settlement on Spectacle island, I had to go and do the Tenpines Bluff quest in order to unlock Preston as a companion, so he hadn't accompanied me on any quests or anything, and because he wasn't yet a companion, I don't think any affinity gains from modding weapons or anything like that would have applied back when he was patrolling Sanctuary.

That would put him on 0 affinity when I started building, and so far, have had three new conversations with him, which I'm guessing matches affinity 250, 500, and 750.

I put him away for the time being though, and am now running around with Deacon, since I'm doing Railroad missions while I take a break from building. I'll swap Preston back in when I get back to the Island and finish making stuff, see if I can get his affinity maxed out.

Crafting does for some.

but not building in workshop mode

Then how did I get Preston so far through his affinity with me? I literally picked him up for the first time, brought him to the island, and started building in workshop mode. I but a couple buildings up, lots of power lines, and a massive wall around the island, but it was all building, not crafting or modding. Just building.

if so, i would have had all my Comanions on full affinity

Building settlements does not build affinity. Any companion you have traveling with you will have their affinity slowely rise on its own over time. Building a settlement is a time consuming process, if you care enough about settlements to do more than plant a few beds in a basic shack that is, so its an easy way to gain affinity without noticing it.

Take any of them with you while building, eventually they'll rank up to the point where you can do their specific quests (not all companions have an affinity mission), thats what I do with all those useless sacks of meat called companions.
