You'll learn about provisioners later in the game. Settlements can be connected with supply lines. As such is Red Rocket Station an interesting location, because one can connect Sanctuary and Abernathy Farm to it as well as Starlight Drive-In. It so becomes a hub in the North-West of the map.

But you'll see. Just learn from the attacks and keep improving your settlements. It will all come naturally to you if you only let it.

About the settlement itself: the roof top is an interesting platform to build on. You can build wood or metal stairs to get on top of it and can then place turrets and whatever you like there.

My Red Rocket is a robot depot / provisioner hub.
My red rocket, surrounding wall made of steel bar stools. Residential base built on rocket roof. Kennel for dog near gas pumps and trough for brahmin.

Mine is for robot depot and where I send all my companions. Though I might have to move the companions to bunker hill or the airport settlemennt later since they can't be used for a Raider Settlement

Thats a good idea red rocket would be great for provisions for raider bases since its too small to build at

I used the near start red rocket as spare power armor storage and display, personally. No settlers, just a quiet (and heavily armed) garage for when I needed time to myself.
I am just remodelling Red Rocket as a small community of shacks. I have a small player home inside. All the crafting is done where the Power Armour area is kept and stores are placed above ground on the area where the Red Rocket is .
because this is your first play thru go with that!
it sounds great sanctuary then onto diner you will be also mixing up your settlements builds by doing this and what better way to finish dinner then onto the movies (starlight drive thru)
look south of redrocket alittle for a bit of bartering at a near by farm and at another diner east of red rocket
everyones guilty of playing settlements rather than main quests but as long as your having fun who cares
If you build just right it can provide a lot of 'cover' for provisioners and 'raiding' parties to the North and West or cut them down before they get to Abanarthy.

It can make a good personal getaway if you need it. Once you get more advanced in your builds you'll figure out ways to keep NPC's out of your personal space, but it take a lot of practice to get things just right. I don't think my settlements will truly ever be completed.

Too many mods and infinite combinations!
I've turned mine into a base of operations, fort, and cat sanctuary. Half a dozen settlers/followers to act as guards, growers, and a provisioner. Add a wall and lots of turrets, and you have somewhere that really isn't worth raiding, but is still self sufficient, and yet quiet enough that you don't really have to deal with settlers or anyone when you head home.
I've been using it personally as just a place to get away from my followers, however I've been thinking about doing something else with it. I put a concrete door on the outside, where the doorway is leading into the garage, then I put a spawn point inside the garage, there's a button on the inside, so you can hit that to go out and there's enough of a delay that you can close the door before leaving.
I use RR as a small settlement and PA repair/overhaul station. The roof is ringed with missile launchers and HMG turrets. Enough food, water and beds for 6 settlers. 3 on farming duty, 1 running a full service bar & grill, and two on sentry duty. A nice little place..
From the beginning I always leave it with zero settlers, as my place to get away from all the whining needy feckless cretins. A great place to just craft guns and food and chems and fix armour and generally get some peace and quiet.
