Missed opportunity with Fallout 4's art style
After thinking hard about the Fallout 4 artstyle, is there any explanation about how things still have a colorful layer of paint (besides diamond city) after 210 years in Boston after how things look in DC and New Vegas? Are there any terminal entries or dialogue in game explaining this phenomenon, was Boston the only place in the fallout universe where they were selling nuclear-proof paint primer or did the nuclear blast just seal the color in?

If there isn't then that's just a huge missed opportunity for explaining the new artstyle after the greens and browns that the previous games had.

and halloween decorations still appear on the porches. And im sure a long list of other tihings.

FO4 was not well made. It was built for consoles, not big rig gaming computers.

considering that halloween decorations and paint are a matter of just different textures and removing certain assets, i can say with certainty its not a result of being built for consoles and more of Bethesda lack of thinking things through or attention to detail this time around.

I wouldn't call it not well made, just not finished as it feels more like an alpha for a much better game that they were too lazy to finish.

Thats what I mean is the lack of thinking at Bethesda. The entier platform was built optimized for Consoles. Then they hyped and over invested in game systems which do not matter to the game, Item Mods and Settlements. Thus left all that other stuff, not well throught out or developed enough not to stick out.

Considering how hard they pushed for console mods, a major reason for adding some new systems and quality of life improvements was so that it would be easier for modders so they wouldn't have to make their own content. The settlement system was put in so that they wouldn't have to make interesting locations, instead you'd have to do it. Weapon mods were something absolutely had to put in after New Vegas as well as to make the number of actual weapons in game much larger than they actually are which would have succeeded had they had weapon degradation. A voiced protagonist was a failed attempt to try to create more emotional depth for the events of the intro which Todd Howard confirmed already.

i already did that quest, its part of the reason for the topic since i expected an explanation to be found in the store. Also abbot only cares about painting the wall not the city.

if your interested in Fallout 4 art, There is a book,
"The Art Of Fallout 4 by Bethesda Game Studios is a must-have collectible for fans and a trusty companion for every Wasteland wanderer. Featuring never-before-seen designs and concept art from the game's dynamic environments, iconic characters, detailed weapons and more - along with commentary from the developers themselves.".

i already bought the book, it makes me sad what they didn't get to put in as well as that they seemed so close to solving the problem that the voiced protagnist didn't do. Also it shows how much more inspired that the guys who designed the art and characters were than the writers and gameplay designers of it.

Well I got the other book, The survival guide Collectible and it shows that the others did put the work in.

i have this pipboy clock from FO3 that burned out within 2 weeks. that has to account for some sort of lack of vision on the part of fan exploitation, because the long term effect was to not buy any other collector items from them.

Personally my biggest problem is the "Design" weapons/armor look horrible on this game. Similar to how Skyrim looked with over sized weapons that were insanely impractical and over designed armor (Pre war stuff) that are impractical. Everything looks just so far off from the past games which most fire arms looked like fire arms instead of something someone made for a B Scifi Movie in the 1960s.

true, they were trying to go for a more pulp sci-fi look for Fallout 4 after Fallout 3 which i personally didn't mind even though it definitely felt too distant from previous game. I should also point out that the art book actually shows they've been working on the art direction since 2009 while they were working on Skyrim. I always thought that the reason for the new, overdesigned hardware in Boston was because they were experimental or just right off the production line.

my biggest problem with the game is the factions, they all suck and just lack any depth that make them compelling or worthwhile to care for.

Regarding the paint: Consider the state of consumer protection in 2077. Look at all the things around that irradiate you or could outright kill you.

Does this seem to you the kind of society that's at all concerned about white lead, red lead, yellow cadmium, or other toxic pigments in paints? With all the cobalt 60 flying around there's probably plenty of cobalt blue to go around. Inorganic pigments tend to keep their color and will last as long as the binder does.

From outside the game world, the pre-fab metal houses get even better explanations; they were originally enameled, like older appliances and kitchenware. It's not paint over steel, it's a fired vitreous coating... basically a thin layer of soft and deeply colored glass.

That's enameled. That's brightly colored. That's around roughly 800 years old.

Thank you for that, it still weird though they couldn't just mention something like this since nearly every other city or place in the Fallout universe look like such a hell hole. Then again in Fallout 3, your proximity to ground zero of a nuclear blast is much smaller than in Fallout 4 since one bomb did land directly on the White House in DC which was smaller than the one that hit the glowing sea. This is a good explanation but still a missed oppurtunity for Bethesda.

They wouldn't mention it, because how often do you find yourself discussing house paint pigments with total strangers in the middle of an apocalyptic nightmare...
