Hatch (detonate)
Does anyone know what's up with a hatch you can find near a tower south of Abernathy Farm, that says Hatch (Detonate)? If you activate it, it half opens, and then the option becomes Hatch (Close).

Shoot it.

You have to talk to the owner first, or kill him, then it will open. It's not always near Abernathy, it's a roaming random encounter, same way 'Blakes funeral' is.

It's a random event - it can appear almost anywhere.

OK and who might the owner be? No one in sight.

he usually walks away, you missed him, better luck next time buster.

I have missed him before a few times, did catch him other times and went inside.

To clarify that "roaming" part, you'll find the hatch once, at a random spot, and for that character it will remain wherever you've found it and occupy that random encounter location (so other random encounters won't happen there). If you play a new character, it may turn up somewhere else, but will likewise stay there forever for that character.

There's also a pile of burning tyres that does this, and probably a few other random encounters.

So, if the guy that's supposed to be there isn't there, this hatch in my "world' will be forever useless?

The guy should be nearby, shooing you away claiming it's his discovery. He then blows the hatch.

Pretty much (if he's really gone). Unless you're going to play around with console commands, it's just a piece of interesting scenery for you, like all those boarded-up doorways. Some encounters do have permanent consequences that you can't change once they've happened.

I don't remember there being any particularly special loot inside it, but it was potentially a convenient hiding spot.

not forever, til it respawns elsewhere, same as other General random encounters. I have had The Hatch move several times in same chr. playthrough.

I've never had that happen; all the ones I've got stay where they first spawned, and it seems to apply the same way for all my characters.

Speaking of random... has anyone encountered the imposter Preston Garvey? Hahahaha, I did once, dresses just like Preston, looks like Preston, says he's Preston Garvey, and when you say you know Preston, he runs away. Never encountered him again with other characters.

seriously, they move within a day or two, I know this because I returned next day to get a screenshot and it was gone. I found it same playthrough later in game, and you gotta be quick to catch the Scavenger. Here's another that respawns similarly, 'Preacher at Funeral'

I had it turn up by the side of a pool with mirelurks south of the Lonely Chapel, and it hasn't ever budged an inch. It particularly stood out for me because this was with my main character and I first found it elsewhere with a different character, and was surprised I hadn't already seen it (I'd happened to bypass the pool with my main character). That was also true for the character who first found the hatch (near Revere Satellite Array); it just stay where it appeared.

I've seen similar items, like the burning tyres, and some unburning ones (which with my main character are on a ridge west of Sunshine Tidings Co-op), where certain random physical features seem to lock into a particular spot once they appear.
