There are companion mods that also give them unlimited ammo.

If you give them a different wep, you'll have to supply them with the right ammo, and keep them supplied as they use it up.

Nope, because it is normally inaccessible by you. It does not show in their inventory.

Mind, that even if a companion's default weapon uses for instance .38 ammo, giving that companion another weapon using the same caliber will still require you to supply ammo normally.

Is there a way to icnrease their gun damage without giving them a different weapon + lots of ammo? Or without using the mod for unlimited ocmpanion ammo.

I don't think there's any console command that going to let you do that. However, you can create a plugin with the Creation Kit and modify that companion in whichever way you want.

I use this mod [www.nexusmods.com]
Doesn't the Cheat terminal does this?

I thought if you supply just 1 bullet for any other weapon they have unlimited magazines for that weapon

That works for SETTLERS, not companions.

Companions have unlimited ammo for their default weapon. Their default weapon is glued to them and cannot be removed.

Any weapon you provide them with requires you to also provide ammo.

They'll scavenge weapons and ammo based on criteria that it's better for them than what they have.

Settlers have unlimited ammo for any weapon you provide them if you supply them with 1 round. They will also scavenge weapons based on criteria that it's better for them in a combat situation.

The only weapons for settlers that aren't unlimited are Missiles for the Missile Launcher, and Mini Nukes for the Fat Man.

If you're worried that you might run out of ammo then use the Scrounger perk. It exists for a good reason.

He's probably more worried that companion AI is utterly atrocious and that ammo in their inventory lasts about as long as a piece of chicken would in the pocket of a fat kid. When I discovered that dumbpanions required ammo I would give them a few hundred for that legendary toy I had just gifted them and yet half way through a single mission they are already out of ammo and back on their default weapon.

100 rounds can last me days but then I'm not an NPC, I don't continually fire at someone who is behind cover. If you listen to some of the background firefights in FO4 they go on for bloody ages, on several occasions I have left a settlement in a blind rage to murder both sides of whatever argument is in progress because the noise of a thousand rounds being exchanged while you try to create the perfect indoor brahmin pen is distracting to the highest levels of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!

I find the NPC AI to be quite effective when given the right gear. My settlers fight off attacks sometimes within just a few seconds and my provisioners can be brutally effective in killing entire street gangs. Sure, it costs them a bit more ammo than what a smart player requires, but for an AI is it still impressive.

If you cannot be bothered with managing ammo, i.e. by giving all .38 ammo to your companion and using .45 for yourself, then restrict your companion to use only weapons with a low rate of fire or even a melee weapon. Nobody says you're required to keep your companions fully stocked at all times (or else the world will fall apart). Just give them what you can spare and skill up Scrounger. Or maybe you never wanted to have a real companion in the first place... Then simply get a robot. Those need no ammo.
