If you select "luck" then it has a likeness of 4, because each letter matches with the password.
If you select "muck" then the likeness is 3, because only 3 letters match.
If you had "kcul" then it would have a likeness of 0, because although it has all the right letters does not one of them match the exact position.
That's all.
Also know that any occurance of matching brackets within a line provides bonuses, like removing entries (duds) or resetting the number of tries. This can be: [], {}, () or <>. They can even overlap. I.e. "[.$.<./.]..>.:." are two bonuses because you have [] and <> in there. Move the mouse over them and it will highlight it for you, too.
No, because you can get a likeness of 1.
I don't think this always works either. Many times I found that the "answer" would have letters in the same positions as another word I tried that had a likeness of zero. I started just trying three random tries and then exiting over and over...I found that faster than actually analyzing all the words to see where there were matches. Then I eventually just installed the easy hacking mod that will make so the only option to pick is the correct one.
Example if the word is Potato and it says likeness 4 its "tato" it cant be like "po" and "to"? The letters have to be near eachother without gaps or not?
potato and tato would he likeness=1 because of the t
OP, IT is simple. Going with LUCK, you will get a likeness for each letter that's in the correct position of the password.
Muck, 3 correct, U, C and K.
Loony, 1 letter correct, L
Butter, 1 letter correct, U
Luck is a four letter word and if the first letter is correct then you have a likeness of 1
Butter is a 6 letter word but, the U is the second letter of the password LUCK, so 1 likeness
Anytime you get a likeness it is because the word you chose has at least 1 letter in the correct position matching the password. That correct letter is not always the same as the correct letter in the last word you tried. Password Luck, chose Lads=L is correct. Chose Duds=U is correct.
EDIT; That was just the way I chose to explain it. I know you won't see 6 letter words on a terminal where the password only has 4 letters to it. :)
1. Pick one of the word at random, and make that your first guess. The program will respond with how many letters are in the right place.
As an example let's say you were unlucky, and got zero in response (no letters in the correct position)
2. Compare each word to the one you guessed. Write down the words that has the same number of matching letters that you got as answer just before.
In my example you had zero matching letters, so you should then write down all words that has no matching letters. These are the only possible answers, so the rest of the words can be scrapped.
3. Randomly guess one of the words on your now shorter list of possible answers. The program will respond with how many letters are in the correct position. This time compare the words on your list, to the word you just guessed. Any word that has a different number of matching letters can be scrapped (put a line across it in your list).
Example: The program told you that your guess has 2 likenesses. If a word on your list has one match, it should be scrapped. If it has three matches, it should be scrapped, etc.
4. Repeat (3) until you have only one word left.
If you haven't got the answer by the time you are on your last guess, it's better to log out and start over.
mrfree's explanation of what a likeness is is good, so make sure you understand that first.
You choose a word by clicking on it. If you didn't guess correctly, the terminal will display "x/y correct" where x is the number of correct letters, and y is the word length. A letter is correct only if it is in the right spot. For example, if the password is "RELEASED" and you choose "DETECTOR" then you will be told that there are 2/8 correct because there are 'E's in the 2nd and 4th place for both. The words have other letters in common, like 'R', but it is in the first spot in one word, and the last in the other. You have four attempts to select the correct password"

Actually, I'd say the luckiest thing you can do is get 0 likenesses for your first attempt, since that eliminates the most letters of any of the other choices. Everything you said is correct, just pointing out that things get incredibly easy when you get a 0 for that first choice.
For example,if the word you choose is "Potato" and get 0 likenesses then congrats, you've eliminated any and all words that have a P in the first slot, an O in the second slot, a T in the third slot... etc.
its way faster then trying to match up the letters to number of letters
If your getting frustrated thier is a mod you can get to show you the correct word every time.
I now only read through the word list once and can usually memorize some of the more frequent letters. Like if many end with an S or a T or an N. Or which vocals appear commonly. If I spot any brackets then I click them to reduce the number of words.
So I now have either reduced the number of words or at least have a good first guess. If my guess has a likeness of 0 then it means I can exclude several other words, too.
This like I said happens in one read through.
Only at the beginning, when I didn't have a clue about how hacking worked, was it possible that I got myself locked out. Now I usually don't need more than two or three attempts. It's child's play now.
I start with words that have similar letters to the other words. For instance, choosing a word that starts or ends with 's' will either point to those other words with 's' in the same position as your next guess, or eliminate them.
There have been times when the list of words don't even make sense, like in the above example, you've found one that does match, and there aren't any words left with the same letters in the same position.
I just quicksave before hacking. Sometimes the next set of words after a lockout will be easier. ("here you go little baby, we'll make it easier for you so you don't start crying")
I've also noticed that you can access most terminals while in power armor, but then there are some that won't let you. It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a hackable or open terminal.
