What's a good main settlement for survival?
Sanctuary is such a long walk because it's at the edge of the map, I want something around the center that's big.

You aren't really gonna get big in the center....

But Hangman's Alley is, IMO, the best settlement for survival...

Centrally located and only moments from Diamond City...

There's a mod which opens up a lot of the buildings as well, which does increase it's size significantly...

I also really like Hangman's Alley. It is small but I like the challenge that presents and it's offset slightly by having Diamond City and Greygarden nearby.

I also used Hangmans, but with no settlers. You have close by, a bottleing plant for carrying water, Graygarden, vault 81, diamond city, and can walk to goodneihbor easy enough. Also the Bos is just over the bridge about the same distance from diamond city. If you give nuka kola to the begger in diamond city you can send him to hangmans to farm for you if you want.

If you are talking about the mod that opens up the apartments, heck yeah. That is amazing and truly makes it a viable/interesting settlement. I use it for a caravan 'nexus', that way I have patrols going out all over Boston, shooting up encounters.

I certainly am...

Don't recall the name, and CBF looking it up right now, but yeah, makes Hangman's a fantastic HQ option...

I'm chilling at hangmans alley at the moment, it's alright. It's nice how it's right next to diamond city? Are there any nicer settlements that close and that have safe routes?

i always ended up in hangman's alley on survival. every time. it wasn't really a decision of mine, it just happened every time. i think it's because it's, ....

- not that far from the starting point
- the story wants me to go to diamond city anyways
- diamond city (for buying & selling stuff)
- center is full of enemy spawn points
- it's close to the center of the map
- ......?

I use Starlight Drive In for the north west, Finch Farm for the north east, Hangman's Alley for the center, and Jamaica Plain for the south.

Jamaica Plain is a little small in terms of build size... but it was closer to where I need to go for most quest objectives, otherwise I'd use the Marina.

Starlight is big, but distant after the early quests. I almost moved it to Finch Farm, but I decided to keep it and just accept I wouldn't be around much.

Finch Farm is on the way to many objectives, and has that nice freeway section to build on.

And the advantages of Hangman's Alley have already been said. I like how the settlers still say they "need to get back to Diamond City someday...", when it's right down the street.

EDIT: Map of all the settlements -> https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/b5/d3/9e/b5d39e33e27b75432f4b6972a349eef3.jpg

Bunker Hill is also central, though not quite as close to Diamond City. It's really hard to beat Hangman's Alley for settlements near there.
