As for you using the weapon, except for humans, almost everything is either significantly rad resistant or simply immune. Even high level humuns typically wear lead lined armour and/or various degree of rad resistant outfits. So you are right, it is pathetic. I think ghouls are actually healed by it, I have not tested this though, I am sure someone here can tell us.
Once you get the Lorenzo gun, which actually has a unique mod (Legendary?). Put this on a good legendary gamma gun you find and you will have a gamma gun that does semi decent physical damage as well.
I have it on a ledgendary wounding gamma gun, fully upgraded and in the hands of a settler. Works pretty well with the whole 'unlimited ammo for NPC's' thing.
Children of atom, and some of the gunnes have lead linned armor, or they have a perk aginst taking rads.
Go to far harbor, and do the clense, and you will not suffer a much from radiation. Also there are 2 perks for radiation. One actually heals you when you get shot by a gamma gun. The other makes you more and more immune to the gamma gun.
