Fred O'Connell - does it matter that he's now dead? (minor spoilers)

I started following this NPC because he said he was on his way to vault 81, cool I thought so I decided to see where he would go (since I didn't know where vault 81 was). We were attacked by Super Mutants outside Diamond City and Fred got killed.

What followed was an epic gun battle with the mutants, me and Fred's guard. Some guards outside Diamond City then joined in and in the confusing melee some woman comes running up to me and tells me to quickly follow her, so I legged it after her into a store called Hardware Town. I suspected a ruse so I wan't surprised when it turned out to be a trap. Another epic gun fight with some Raiders then happened.

And well, I'd rather not quick load now because all that fighting was so awesome and I came out of it bloodied but still alive.

Does it matter that this NPC is dead now? Aprart from the fact I'll have to find vault 81 on my own now.

He's just a travelling merchant (harsh but It's true), so he won't cause anything bad to happen just by him dying.
Oh, and strong "likes" it if you kill Fred.

I always seem to find him dead on the road between the Drive In and the boathouse.

Besides marking where Vault 81 is he is fairly useless it seems.

Okay thanks. I found vault 81, it was near by. Although I just had the game crash on my at the house by Chestnut Hillock Reservoir on the way to it. Frame rate dropped to 1 and then game crashed for some reason. Always seems to happen in places where those weird monkey toy things are.
