Recommendations for cheap new Fallout 4-capable PCs?
I'd like to buy a new desktop mainly just to play F4 on a better system than my current PC.
Prefer not to spend more than $500 total.
Any recommendations? Links welcome.

No more than $500?
If you're talking about pre-built, then don't bother
There's some options, but you may or may not like it

You can run this game fine on an fx6300 but that will seriously limit future upgrades due to the am3 socket.

This is the cheapest I could throw together. You still need an OS etc and you could pick up second hand parts. But sub 500 is possible.

Your link is broken, and sub 500 is gonna run this game like utter crap, particularly if you are out of your mind enough to pick an FX-6300 over an i3-7350K

It is pure budget and runs fallout 4 fine. The link works fine, I just tried it. He was asking for a budget build and I helped the guy out with my opinion. I don't see how it has anything to do with you.

That's fine but I put together a budget pc for sub 500. That's all he wanted. I have used a 6300 for about 3 years or more and it still runs the latest games. It cost me under £60 so I would say it was excellent value at that time. Granted it is not something I would advise buying now for a pc to last.

I am ready for an upgrade so will be looking at the new ryzen chips over the next few months.

Get a cheap Dell desktop with an i5 and stick an Nvidia 1050Ti in it. Shouldn't cost more than $500 including monitor.

Jotaro's build could also drop the cooler as the stock cooler will be fine.

Running an AMD FX with the stock cooler is an horrible idea. They heat even more than the Phenom II did, and you don't want to use a Phenom II X6 without some sort of aftermarket cooling, trust me. What his build can drop is that high end audio card, worthless for a budget PC.

Well yes drop those as well as the cooler was my point. I used the stock cooler for about 2 years on that chip and never had an issue with heat. Even now it rarely goes over 45 degrees with an upgraded cooler. Honestly you do the 6300 a disservice, it is very capable for its price range. Not that I would bye one now I still run games with high settings.

Even if you went with a G4560 or another hyperthreaded Kaby Lake CPU you'd still WHACK the 6300 at a third of the power consumption, have over thrice the memory throughput, and still a valid base to drop an i7-7700 on someday. No point in going with AM3 anymore, for any reason whatsoever.

Like I already said. It is a pure budget build without worrying about future proofing. The goal was to build the cheapest rig to run fallout. I think you are taking this out of context.

Yes am3 is not something I would put in a new rig because I would want some sort of potential to upgrade.

I really don't care. I built a budget pc out of boredom. Do you really think I want to debate chips all day. I have no alligence to any manufacturer and a you tube clip doesn't interest me either especially on a phone with a broken speaker.

Plenty of used systems available on amazon.com in the $400.00 to $500.00 range.
Many capable of running this game as long as you dont expect higher graphic settings.
pre HD texture pack the base game works fairly decent on some rather dated hardware.

And I'm seeing mostly I7 6700k's when using these filters;
Processor type: Intel core I7, Number of CPU cores: Quad core, Graphics Processor: Nvidia, Condition: Used, Price: Up to $500.00

Even a water cooled I7 6700k, 16 Gb ram, 2TB HDD & 500GB SSD and a GTX Titan Z 12GB gpu

Depends on which stock cooler your talking about? The orginal one which was crap or the new Wraith Cooler. Personally I tossed the stock cooler (original one) on the 8350 3 days after I got it and replaced it with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. Never had a problem since.

I do believe the point your missing in the thread is cost. If someone says they can only afford $500 that would be not more than $500, $580 is more than $500. True the 6300 is an older chip if thats all they can afford thats it. Should they wait and see what the new AMD chip price is then yes they should.

Should they spend a bunch of money on a nice Intel chip and have no money left over for the video card, probably not, sort of defeats the purpose.

For some people cost is more important than performance. Spend a lot play at Ultra spend some play at medium, All they want to do is play the game.

Sure if you got lots of money and nothing to spend it on build the best system money can buy, just remember the best system money can buy will be out of date a few weeks after you built it.
