I would asume that when your caricter leaves the house and is stoped at the gate by the altercation caused by the vult tec rep. the gurads up top sencably let in the first commers.
The delay geting the lift going again when you get on (and leting you see the area geting nuked) is caused by the hydrolics being reset to the decent position, again.

There is a second room of cryo pods with dead people inside. So it was more than six people plus the staff; overseer, scientist, techs, and guards.

you mean like where did Raiders come from? yeah I wonder that too. Some humans had their own shelters, like, Cabot family.

There may be a large number of illegal aliens living in the US by then.

There were already other people inside Vault 111 by the time you get in there, some of whom you see as you're walking in; it wasn't just the people who came down on the lift with you. The other people presumably got inside earlier than you did.

you also can choose not to walk to the vault. Or run in the opposite direction when the sirens go off. Of course, the game is subtly changed in that regard if you choose to do so.

Yeah, right. Think, please. Think.

What happens is: tick, tick, tick, world goes BOOM!

Well, in the vault, I believe all the invitees died (except you and Shawn), as all the other cryopods malfunctioned. The overseer died (his skeleton is in his office), and if you read the lore on the computers, it sounds like the staff and guards got out (by killing the overseer and triggering the escape tunnel thing). As for the cryopod itself, you didn't know it was a cryopod - it was supposed to 'decontaminate' you before 'going to live in the vault'. Vault-Tec basically tricked the invitees, so you would have no reason to expect trouble with the pod in the beginning.

As for the rest of the people in the Commonwealth, those are survivors (ghouls) or descendants of survivors (raiders, gunner, settlers, etc.). Not every single inch of ground was nuked and many hid out from the radiation (assumption). I expect some people are from outside the Commonwealth and made their way here to either join up with raiders, or any of the other factions. As civilization is pretty much down the drain at this point, it's much easier to be a raider and steal everything than trying to live 'legit', hence why there are a ton of raiders. (There is some lore (computer log entries) around this I think at Libertalia - or maybe the other big ship - where the raiders there started out 'good', but found it easier and more profitable to turn bad and become raiders.)

Possibly if you just hung around in town - I never tried that.. but I know for a fact if you leave the 'boundary' of Sanctuary... well you don't get far. lol

The ones at ship if i recall were old minutemen. That after being short changed and backstabbed to often turned to raiding. Though in end leader has 2nd thoughts if i recall.
