Anyway to force Fallout 4 to use more RAM?
I have 32GB of RAM and a 1070.

I am getting lag spikes with my HD activity spiking every time this happens. This either means Fallout 4 is loading stuff onto the page file on my hard disk or it's not loading things into RAM before it should.

Is there any fix for this?

Weird. I presume you are using the new High Res DLC, right? I just posted a new thread about an issue where it eats my 16 GB completely and still it's not enough. I have a mind to borrow bigger sticks to see how it handles then.

I've read fsutil could do such a thing, yet it doesn't work for me and there are reports that it's an abandoned Windows feature. I'll let you be the judge of it.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785435(v=ws.11).aspx

Basically what it's supposed to do is to change NTFS' behaviour to use more system RAM for file caching. Entered into a command shell: fsutil behavior set memoryusage 2

Then there are a couple if .ini parameters for the game you can try:

Fallout4.ini
[General]
uExterior Cell Buffer=100 (default is 47)
iPreloadSizeLimit=838860800 (default is half of this)

You'll have to play around with it and see what works. I haven't had the time yet to fully explore those. You might want to report back on those...

Keep the pagefile OFF and it will use more ram, I keep mine off cause its faster loading for me but then I have have to restart the game about every 3 to 4 hours to refresh it due to my 16GB not being enough

since your on 32GB you should be able to play longer

You mean disable Windows' pagefile completely?

Man, how the hell does Bethesda get away with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ programming so easily. I need to change jobs lol

The HD Texture Pack is the last DLC by Bethesda. It is supposed to push the limits so that players can enjoy Fallout 4 for a few good years more to come. Bethesda simply thought a head and made the DLC much more demanding than any before. If this is cannot be understood then I don't know what to tell you.

And OSes paging out memory isn't Bethesda's doing. It's part of every modern OS. By turning it off do you limit yourself and will have to restart your game more often. You can restart your game more often with or without it. Without it will you have no other choice.

Trying to fix their ♥♥♥♥ is a futile effort. There are platoons of modders that have been trying to fix Bethesda's games for years.

I don't have the HD texture pack installed.

I know how page files, RAM, stack, and heaps work. Without writing a 3 page response: trust me, this is Bethesda's fault. This issue has been around since Skyrim.

EDIT: Forgot to mention. The reason I'm not going to disable Windows' page file can be Googled. Long story short is you should never disable your page file.

I hope it's all right with you if I skip out on that one.

Read up on pagefiles, RAM, heap, and stacks, you'll understand why.

I'm a software engineer for 27 years. Doesn't matter though. Anyone who says "trust me" cannot, should not and doesn't want to be trusted. You're going to learn this someday.

That would require me to revese engineer the game, split the engine part out, find how it is perrforming memory allocation and caching files from the drive (which is probably a mess because they likely built on top of the engine since Morrowind), recompile it, test it and likely find new bugs, repeat the process until it works, and finally either get hired or sued by Bethesda.

No thanks.

And you couldn't/didn't figure out obvious signs of inefficent memory management?

Log your HDD activity next time you load up FO4 and you'll see what I mean.

So how much does it actually use?

For me (with 16 GB) without the pack it averages around 6 GB (depends on the area, 5 for Sanctuary Hills, up to 8 in downtown). Didn't notice much lagging. Then again I'm not overly sensitive to it.

6~ as well

The thing is it runs at 60+ FPS normally but I'll get lag spikes outside (indoors seems to load everything) as soon as the game tries to load things; my HDD being hammered during these spikes makes me suspcious about how the loading is being done.

I thought it was mods at first so I disabled most of them but the issue was sill there. Gonna try disabling everything and seeing what happens.
