What happened to Australia? What's it like?
If the megafauna is this violent and bad in the Commonwealth, what's it like in the place where the animals were that dangerous to begin with? Deathclawzilla, anyone?

It seems most if not all the devastation and its aftermath took place in the Northern Hemisphere.
I've not seen any references to the Southern Hemisphere ever being involved in the holocaust.
But I could be wrong and I'll need to research this.

The majority of earth was effected according to the lore, we don't know how other areas are besides The US and China.

What we do know is that Moriarty and Tenpenny both had their families and themselves flock to the US, which may hint at how the conditions are over there.

A quote from, Emil (Note: This is not Interplay or Black Isle, rather Bethesda's take on it):
"Allistair Tenpenny came to the Capital Wasteland from Great Britain to seek his fortune, so that alone tells you that the U.K. was also hit in the war. And if he came to U.S. to succeed, that says a lot about how screwed up Europe must be. So we just allude, a little bit, to the state of the rest of the world. We like to leave a lot to the players' imaginations, and somebody like Tenpenny serves as a catalyst for those thoughts." - Emil Pagliarulo[5]

So basically MAD

It may have suffered some fallout and been hurt by the resource wars but nothing I've read in the lore explicitly states anything about Australia. Even if the classic India/Pakistan conflict happened in the lore, the southwest Pacific would be devestated similarly to the US. My best guess is that Australia would be, if anything, the best place to be... Except for maybe the wildlife. Try New Zealand?

Nothing specific except the U.S was Interplay and Black Isle's goal to explain, however, Joshua Sawyer wanted to establish the resource wars for a new fallout title but It doesn't seem like that'll happen, rather in the Wasteland series in its own form but not by sawyer.

You beat me to this...
Mad Max is probably not that far off in the Fallout universe. Australia probably didn't get hit directly with any nukes but the lack of outside trade with other countries meant there would have been extreme shortages on top of what was already happening. That alone could have toppled the government and caused anarchy.

China being close enough radiation would have found its way to Australia as well. We already see in Fallout 4 and 3 that the ocean is highly radioactive so its a good bet that the ocean around Australia is just as toxic. I can only imagine what things would be swimming around the Great Barrier Reef. There probably wouldn't be the scorched trees and dead vegetation that you see in Fallout 4 but there would be a lot of mutated plants from the radiation in the air.

In short Mad Max meets Fallout meets Point Lookout meets mutant kangaroos and raiders that yell "That's not a knife.......this is a knife" that sorta look like Crocodile Dundee

A Fallout game in Australia sounds 100/10 now.

Australia exports a lot of basic resources (food and mining exports), so they'd have restrictions, but not deadly ones if they shifted rapidly away from produced things that rely on international resources.

Depending on their involvement, they could have suffered a nuke or two, but they're not a priority target.

I kind of want to see what they'd do with "radroos", because I imagine they could turn out pretty freaky; something all spindly and withered that bounds around at high speed and frequently changes direction between leaps. I'd absolutely hate them, of course, especially when they leapt on top of me like a movie velociraptor.

Is anyone here actually from Australia? If you were you would have thought of how dangerous Crocodiles would be; i mean, have you seen the size of some of them? They are in the metres in length. A mutated one would be 80 metres long, have wings, and claws the size of a Spinosaurus.
Edit: removed an innacuracy about them being larger then they actually are; i keep over/under estimating things in metres.
Also: The largest Crocodile found/recorded was 6.17 metres, or 20 feet, 3 inches.

It got less scary. Gatorclaws are a pushover.

I would worry more about the giant irradiated spiders.

And these, yes. Don't forget about the snakes or drop bears either.
