Companion Noise Bug: Gauss Rifle
Hi guys, my companion has suddenly begun to costantly making the noise of a gauss rifle charging - even though not even equipped with it. I read about similar bugs connected to companions using workbenches, but in this case I have no idea what to do.

I already tried the following in vain: Equipping & unequipping them an actual weapon, dismissing the companion and leaving them for at least 24 hours, letting them use various workbenches, entering power armor, saving & reloading

so far nothing has done it. any ideas?

You have to find the actual thing they used to get the sound. Are you sure it's a gauss gun? When I had this problem, I was sure it was a crafting bench. So I went round for hours trying all the crafting benches everywhere, but it was actually a scavenging station. Drove me nuts.

If you can somehow identify the sound but you still can't rid of it, you can try making a mod to replace the sound with a blank audio file. That's obviously not ideal though.

It's been the armor workbench for me and with one of my settlers. It happened right after a Synth attack. And it drove me mad. I thought it's another settler having been replaced by a Synth and now giving off machine sounds like some robot. I went as far as killing the settler just to see if it had any synth components in her. But no.

Turns out it's a relatively common issue. Some said to have had success by sending the NPC to another settlement and having them do other jobs and sending them back again. Didn't work for me though. And it's now a different NPC doing it.

I now keep imagining it's a pace maker, designed by General Atomics.

I got this from what sounded like the armour workbench which the companion will use if you hang around one for any time. I got rid of it by getting the companion to use the armour bench and then stopping them by going into stealth.

It's definitely the sound of a gauss rifle (I wrote "railgun" earlier, sorry) charging up and holding the charge before the shot, took me a while to figure it out because I first thought of a workbench, so I dragged my companion's ass to every workbench there is.

I had this issue before with Curie- only occured when I approached her. She wasn't equiped with it either, but I used it often.

I think I'm having the same problem. For me, it's definitely the Gauss Rifle charging noise, not any workbench sound. Quite a while back Gage kept making that noise any time he came near me, or when we both walked thru a door that changed the cell/map we were in.

A few days ago I noticed MacCready doing it. The thing is he didn't have a gauss rifle on him. I changed his weapon to that and gave him the 2mm ammo, walked away, he caught up, "zzzzzZZZT!"

Then I removed both leaving him with his built-in default weapon, ran away, he caught up, "zzzzzZZZT!" ... WTF?

I'm playing using Survival Mode so I can't experiment with console commands like Resurrect or Disable/Enable.

LOL same with me, my companion grabed a gauss rifle and then she somehow threw it away , now shes stuck with an electric charge sound thats very low. Its so funny XD.
P.S. dont use the tesla from automatron to give companions the gauss charge will get in them as well. I tried it several times, now I cant snip it off.

About that whole "replace it with a silent wave file" thing, . . .

I know this post is old, but I wanted to mention that using the "kill" command and then "disable" and "enable" in that order worked for me, I had this issue with Nick though it came back when he got into power armor, doing it again with him in the power armor fixed it though

As many of you others I got this bug when I gave the Tesla Rifle to a companion, but none of the suggested solutions or mods worked for me BUT I found another way that seems to have worked even after fast traveling etc.

I rebuilt the Tesla Rifle to the automatic variant, gave it to my companion with only 2 ammo and made sure she had another weapon with ammo in her inventory. I then found an enemy, made her shoot her 2 Tesla Rifle shots after which she swapped to the other weapon and the sound was gone. I promptly removed the Tesla Rifle from her inventory and stored it somewhere noone will be able to find it again.

This seems like an incredibly messed up bug that has different solutions for everyone, but I hope this might help some unfortunate soul still playing in 2024...
