Hunting Rifle bugged..?
So I got this fully upgraded .50cal hunting rifle, but half the time it inflicts way less damage than it should. It's like the game suddenly fails to take all modifications and perks into account when calculating the damage output.

Last time I tried to compare the .50cal to the .44 Magnum (as they're very similar damage wise) on a normal Super Mutant.. It took 6 body shots with the .50cal to kill it and only 2 with the .44 Magnum. Sneak attack with the .50cal takes around 1/4th of the health bar, where as the .44 scores an instant kill. So yeah, something is definitely amiss.

Was hoping someone would know a fix or a work around for this problem, as it's starting to get on my nerves and often results in some very awkward battle scenarios.

Do you have perk points invested into semi-automatic rifles?

indeed it can be a perk issue for instance one rank or more in gunslinger and none in rifleman.

Yeah.. I got 3 points in Rifleman and 3 points in Gunslinger.. But the Hunting Rifle is the only weapon I got this specific problem with. Every other semi-automatic weapon seems to work fine even when the rifle bugs out.

Odd by any chance a mod that rebalance weapons?

Sorry for being unclear, but no.. Playing normal Fallout with no mods or dlc what so ever.

Come to think of it, I believe I had the same problem back when the game was released. Memory is a little fuzzy though, so I'm not entirely sure.

There is always a chance that one ends up with a unique bug, but it could also be the way you've gotten your results that may be flawed.

Not every super mutant is the same. They can appear half naked but still can have higher resistances than one in armor, which can throw one off. Best is to look at their resistances through VATS if you have skilled the perk.

Nor is a head shot the same as a body shot. Mirelurks' softest spot are their faces (...). Chances are you are aiming at their head, but the shot lands on their chest/body, or vice versa. The centre of the cross-hair is also not always the point of impact. Input lag, triple-buffering or pre-rendering can take further influence here.

Sneak bonuses only apply as long as it says [Hidden] or [Caution], but once it says [Danger] do you not get the bonus.

Not saying you don't have a bug, but it can be many things why you are seeing this and it may not be a bug at all. I haven't noticed anything like you're seeing other than there often being further reasons behind it. If it keeps troubling you then wait until you've levelled up and switch to combat rifles for sniping. Perhaps the problem will disappear.

What was the range like in your comparisons? If you were sniping with the .50cal you might have been at the 50% falloff range.
