Wouldn't it be cool...?
(Read the comments before you post something that someone has already said. It saves both you and I a LOT of time.)

Now, I know that it's been proven that Ol' Peg, the mythical Ghoul Whale, is not in the game (or, if he is, he's one of the many skeletons dotting the landscape), but I've always had this morbid facination/horrible fear of the unkown under the surface of the ocean and really want it to happen. I'm the kind of person that LOVES looking at shipwrecks and seeing MASSIVE looming monsters from beyond the abyss. The thought of something HUGE swimming under me while out at the beach has always sent chills down my spine in both a good and bad way. It stands to reason that, of course, for the longest time, I've been looking for Ol' Peg. The promise of such a beast roaming the waters of Fallout 4 was exciting, but, alas, it wasn't meant to be. Sure, the skeletons were cool to some extent, but I had my heart set on finding the living whale and being scared to death when brought face to face with it.

So, this is where I'm going with this: I've always had this scinario in my head . Ol' Peg is made about to be this creature of insane power and size (said to be a Blue Whale, so.. yeah... Largest creature on earth) and I sort of wanted a quest to involving him to end with you coming up on him in an odd way. Imagine that you're in the murky waters of Fallot 4 and you can't see two inches in front of your face. You're swimming out to a small area where an NPC has sent you to do some random, seemingly unrelated, task when you reach an area with a mass of abandoned fishing boats. Your quest marker leads you under them and, after you swim down aways, the murk clears upon a massive, bleeding, sore-covered wall of flesh. It's the stomach of the whale. It's almost motionless save for a twitch every so often. You can swim down and see it's mutated head and it moves slightly to look at you with a cold, white eye. You can also swim up and see that the creature's tail is tangled in a long line of old fishing nets that were left when the bombs fell. (This is sort of based on an old story that happened in the early two thousands where a team of people tried to rescue a small humpback whale from a fishing net). It's obviously been struggling for a long while as the net is twisted into the tail so deep that it's digging into the flesh.

I'm unsure if I would like to be able to save Ol' Peg or just watch him die, but whatever. This was just my little idea for a meeting with the whale. I'm sure plenty of other people would rather him show up riding a fire-breathing deathclaw in a blaze of glory, but eh. I like being subtle.

There we go.

No, I'm pretty sure they proved that rumor to be untrue. The Ol' peg legend is a nod to the book 'Moby ♥♥♥♥' where the main character is enamored with the idea of catching and killing the 'Great White Whale.' It makes sense, considering the 'Far Harbor' DLC where Ol' Peg originated.

Not sure it's a rumor considering there's a minor quest that directs you towards the submarine because the boy thinks it's a sea monster/giant ghoul whale. Additionall when completing the questline for the Chinese sumbarine a lot of NPCs start going, "oh, the ghoul whale/sea monster was a submarine, who knew" or there abouts. Additionally the only reference to "Ol Peg is one NPC in Bunker Hill.

Ol' Peg IS the submarine, the boy mistook it for a sea monster, and it lead you to Zao.
There's subtle references to a certain creature, but the submarine is, and in all its entireity, the "Monster".

I'm knew the boy called the sub a 'monster,' not a 'Ghoul Whale.' A lot of people also though that the 'Red Death' or whatever the weird little crab was in far harbor was where the Ghoul Whale myth originated, but now no one knows anything anymore and Far Harbor was a disappointment. The point still stands that I wanted a whale to be in the game and that's what this was about.

So you made an entire rant about how it could exist, even though you just "wanted" it to be in the game?
The Submarine is the Monster, but it would've been nice if it showed you it swimming through the glass before you left.

This isn't a rant. It's a little idea spit-ball. I'm not mad at the devs or anything. I enjoy this game, but I just liked the idea of having a massive, living sea-monster in the game that can scare me because the waters in Fallout 4 totally didn't do that enough *sarcasm.* Maybe not the Ghoul whale, but something. For a game with so much water, there's not much life in it.

It would have been interesting, though obviously they never expanded on using the underwater stuff they wanted.

There was too much of an emphasis on other parts of the game for them to bother; did you know that there was going to be fishing, and a diving suit in the main game?
Which means we may have just gotten some nice under water exploration..but most of their "time" was spent on the settlement system and other various aspects of the game, and thus, they never got to it.

If you have the time, here's an actual rant but It gets the point across:

I thought they would with Far Harbor. I actually have a SERIOUS fear of the ocean that I'm trying to overcome. I kid you not, I AVOID swimming in Fallout 4. I will take the longest possible land path to reach a quest area. Buying Subnautica helped a lot, but still.

Far harbor was slightly rushed and there were some "Underwater" easter eggs but they were pushed outside of the map, indicating that it was supposed to be bigger but they cut it in size.

I actually LOVE watching youtubers turn off the borders and go exploring for that very reason. It's so cool what you find out there. Kinda creepy, too.
Zee_ Feb 18, 2017 @ 5:02pm
Frankly, Bethesda should have left the borders open in the oceans and simply had a script that had a large dark shadow show up under (or in front of) you in the water, add the sound of somethign BIG moving int he water then the sounds of screaming. Have the screen go red and have a message along the lines of "You needed a bigger boat" flash on the screen, then load back to your previous save.

Bing bang boom. Sea monsters are real.

Other games have done similar things and I always enjoyed it.

Hmm... that gives me an idea for a mod. I'll have to get around to that one of these days.
