Fix for everyone with dark face glitch / black face glitch / face bug / face texture bug

Solution for people who can use modding-tools (everyone else watch below):

Use the BA2 Extractor from the Nexus

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/78/?

Open these files at /steamapps/Fallout4/data
"DLCUltraHighResolution - Textures01.ba2"
"DLCUltraHighResolution - Textures02.ba2"
Unpack them someplace.
Delete Face and Body textures (ONLY IF YOU HAVE MODS FOR BOTH !) and you are good.
If you only use a mod for face textures, remove only face textures :)
Repack them.
Replace the originals.

If you feel unsafe about it, please backup the original files instead of removing them. Otherwise you would have to redownload the two archives (8 GB) at a later point when you decide to ditch your 4k facetextures for the 1k Bethesda versions >.>

Non-modders:

If you are unable to repack it as a BA2 (You need the GECK for that) just remove the DLCUltraHighResolution - Textures01.ba2
RENAMING WILL NOT WORK, putting it to a different folder will, though.

This will remove everything this pack contains. So apart form the facetextures you will revert 5% of the textures to the before-DLC state (you wont notice, since it concerns only creatures).

The best solution is when you use a mod that remodels creatures. because then you can remove the first file and dont give a damn since it only contains "actors" - which are creatures and people (and cats)

The app called Archive2 found in;
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Tools\Archive2

Will unpack as well as pack .ba2 archives.

(it is nonsense and will leave you with the textures from the texture pack that you obviously dont want to use - otherwise you wouldnt have a mod installing new textures)

Because when the HD pack released it had several compatibility issues with the game's own stock textures, and it essentially broke virtually every mod out there.

Then it was something else that changed with 1.9 that is causing this, as I've been having the black face problem periodically since the patch, but never before, and didn't bother with the HD pack...

No, he's right. It has been happening on some setups, even unmodded. Happens here on my GTX 980's, when the VRAM is full (which it almost always is). I haven't exactly played the game on my new rig yet but I would presume that it behaves the same. I only ran it real quick once to test how it would run, but my GTX 980's really slow my new CPU down. What you describe is a common bug. But you can also get black faces when not installing mods properly. That is what I was referring to.

I've been looking for a solution to this issue since 1.9 dropped, but there is no obvious answers if you're not using skin texture mods, nor the HD texture pack, which is why I am yet to resolve this...

But I'm still holding out hope someone (clearly not a self-absorbed prat like yourself) could offer more advice than giving me some useless, smug, and self agrandising learn how to install mods n00b type of response...

Ruin, I've been trying to stay out of this and will continue to do so. First, Get em!

Second, I've been getting some NPC's with Darker faces recently. Hadn't thought about it being the 1.9 patch causing it. I thought it might be from the Only new mod I installed that has NPC's in it. The Orphans of the Commonwealth mod. Not sure if that was it, but I thought it might be conflicting with CBBE. Have not uninstalled it.

If you find the cause is the patch and a way to solve it, please let me know.

Great mod, and it isn't that... the cause of the black face problem seems to be that the game incorrectly loads some normal/specular maps. In other words, executable 1.9 is kind of broken and this can happen even in unmodded games. I think it's unlikely, but Bethesda could finish up releasing patch 2.0 or 1.10 resolving this issue and some other minor polish issues before ultimately moving on and leaving this game into their usual abandonment.

I would presume that one solution is to simply drop the 1.8 executable back in (provided you can find it), but Steam doesn't work that way, and with mods being made and tested against 1.9 these days would eventually be a lot of trouble.

Exactly the sort of info I had been hoping for, thanks... You've at least explained why I'm having this issue, even without non-vanilla textures, so that's at least a step in the right direction...

Can't really drop back to 1.8 as I have mods which require the latest version of F4SE, which I don't believe will run if using an earlier executable...

Because I already tried that, and everyone shrugged their shoulders when explaining I was using vanilla skin textures as, apparently, the problem rarely exists unless using the HD pack, or modded textures...
