Fix for everyone with dark face glitch / black face glitch / face bug / face texture bug
Solution for people who can use modding-tools (everyone else watch below):

Use the BA2 Extractor from the Nexus

http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/78/?

Open these files at /steamapps/Fallout4/data
"DLCUltraHighResolution - Textures01.ba2"
"DLCUltraHighResolution - Textures02.ba2"
Unpack them someplace.
Delete Face and Body textures (ONLY IF YOU HAVE MODS FOR BOTH !) and you are good.
If you only use a mod for face textures, remove only face textures :)
Repack them.
Replace the originals.

If you feel unsafe about it, please backup the original files instead of removing them. Otherwise you would have to redownload the two archives (8 GB) at a later point when you decide to ditch your 4k facetextures for the 1k Bethesda versions >.>

Non-modders:

If you are unable to repack it as a BA2 (You need the GECK for that) just remove the DLCUltraHighResolution - Textures01.ba2
RENAMING WILL NOT WORK, putting it to a different folder will, though.

This will remove everything this pack contains. So apart form the facetextures you will revert 5% of the textures to the before-DLC state (you wont notice, since it concerns only creatures).

The best solution is when you use a mod that remodels creatures. because then you can remove the first file and dont give a damn since it only contains "actors" - which are creatures and people (and cats)

Will unpack as well as pack .ba2 archives.

DO NOT DO WHAT IS WRITTEN BELOW HERE (by Joeybpetit)
(it is nonsense and will leave you with the textures from the texture pack that you obviously dont want to use - otherwise you wouldnt have a mod installing new textures)

there's a easier fix, just delet the two files called BaseFemaleHead_d And BaseFemaleHead_s Located in Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Data\textures\actors\character\basehumanfemale. That's what fixed that sunburn lol. It was a face mod but it's apparently not compatable with the new HD Pack until some one decides to fix it thats your best option.

I wonder what's the actual impact of just using BAE and extract the contents of the packs, apply the community fixes and just using it all in loose file format... then again, if i'm going through that trouble, might as well repackage it all into a neat ba2 with the seasons mods applied and easily interchangeable later

I did that. It works. No negative impact. (only did so for the first texturepack archive)
But as you said - using the Geck to just repack it isnt exactly hard to do, so definitly an option.
I use the rest of the textures as lose files.

Smooth. Before I begin my next playthrough i'll do that, and try to optimize a little more for my current hardware. It'll take a while before I can gather every part I need for my new rig, I plan on ordering my new CPU within the next month or two, and then the motherboard, and then some DDR4... should be a fairly high budget build so takes a while, since i'll have to import some parts and I need the exchange rate as favorable as possible to make the build viable

Just a little advice though. If you buy your PC solely for Fallout 4 be reminded, that even with the best hardware in the market you get stuttering and framedrops, especially when you like building in settlements.
I am playing Fallout 4 in 4k on a very high-end PC. Still looks like crap. Shadows are aweful and you cant see anything 200 meters away. When you look down on Diamond City from the Trinity tower it looks like the game is from the 90's.
So if you can play just fine at the moment, you shouldnt order things too fast. Wait for the new CPU generation to come out.

If you buy hardware just now, you will lose out big time and bite your ass when the new GPU's and CPU's are released since then the market will be full of second-hand high end cards and the CPU you would buy now would be siginificantly reduced in price.

The app called Archive2 found in;
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Tools\Archive2

Will unpack as well as pack .ba2 archives.
No need to use BA2 extractor or GECK, other tools also available in that same tools dir.
All provided by Bethesda.

I will include the hint in the first post.
Though the GECK is the creation kit :P
It means "Garden of Eden Creation Kit" - is the same as "creation kit". So I cut this out to not confuse anyone.

I'm not using any face mods at all and it happens with father on the institute, but I didn't make a big deal of it anyway cause he dies at the end of the story

so far I havn't seen the problem anywhere else in game

You realize this doenst "fix" anything, but only destroy the textures people actually want to use? >.>

My male character has the dark face. I went to plastic surgeon and I couldn't add or change scars or markings. I could reshape his face, but not change that color off him either of course.

I don't have any mods that change male faces/body I think, just True Eyes, Lots more Facial Hair, and Valkyr Face. Is it busted for everybody?

-edit Turns out it was a scar mod that was causing the dark face. I used "BlackFaceFixv2" to fix it.

What if your not using the high res pack?
Slump_Lord May 17, 2017 @ 4:23pm
^^^ this exactly. no idea why everyone seems to think this is a new problem. as it existed far before the hd pack. and removing the hd pack dose not fix the problem if you don't even have the hd pack.

Because when the HD pack released it had several compatibility issues with the game's own stock textures, and it essentially broke virtually every mod out there.

Then it was something else that changed with 1.9 that is causing this, as I've been having the black face problem periodically since the patch, but never before, and didn't bother with the HD pack...
