What should I do with settlers?
Hi guys.

I built some defence, planted food, built water pimp, beds etc. but I still have no idea what should I do with them? I have 7 people, 2 of them are farmers, 2 protect my base and these are the only options?

I can tell you two are a hell of a lot of help.

OP,
The more charisma you have, the more settlers come to your settlements up to a standard maximum of 20 at 10 Charisma. Ensure your settlements have a minimum of 100 points in defense.
Once your perks are up enough, you can assign some settlers to run stores (bar, general store, clinic, armor, weapons, clothes).(adds to their "happiness") .. I start with a bar (food and drinks) and make sure they have places to sit and relax when they're finished working the crops for the day before they head off to bed.
Assign each setter to a bed while you're in build mode. (Including provisioners before you send them off)

funny part is settlers sometimes dont sleep in the 20 beds they just stand there ..waitng to work them crops ..this why you must create a area

Stores, slot machines, soda fountain, and exercise equipment can give them things to do.

oh okay, thanks guys. I will keep my eye on it, because now it felt kinda useless when I build them whole base with walls around it and only they do is harvest..

Assign them to the scrap workstation (I forget what it's called)

If you have the Vault Tec DLC, assign one to a barber and one to facial reconstruction.

If you have Local Leader and Cap Collector rank 2 build and assign them to stores.

if you put them to farm you get food, you can put them on scavenge stations to get more junk, build shops of diferent kinds to get more money and access to more traders on your settlements, you can link your settlements giving the provisioner jobo to one of your settlers. In survival mode having a couple of working settlements is really handy

Frankly, building walls is a waste of resources and you're settlement is better off with a killer defense. Let me explain.

Building a walled in settlement won't keep attackers out even if you have a gated way in & out.
It's an odd game mechanic that takes into account your distance from the settlement under attack and ignores that you have any walls. (enemies end up inside).

It also consumes your available build space limits.
So here is what I chose to do and it works great.
With plenty of power and missile turrets, you can set up a meat grinder for the enemy to haplessly try to get past. What they manage to get past, settlers with killer weapons (such as gauss rifles) will finish tearing them to pieces (litterally). Set up your missile turrets on platforms above ground or any place on an existing structures (such as roof corners).
All you have to do is show up and help out, you won't have to do much except pick up loot which you can salvage.

Now, settlers tend the crops, BUT it's up to you to harvest the crops. Harvest the crops and store them in the workshop bench (or any crafting station ... it doesn't make any difference).
When you have supply lines .. all that extra crop storage shows up at the other settlements you have tied to the supply line.

Mutefruit ... ppfftt .. is a waste so I plant 12 each of carrots or 12 tatos, or 12 razor grain for each settler to tend.
Each settler produces a limit of 6 units. 12 carrots produces 6 units and 12 tatos produces 6 units. 12 razor grain produces 6 units. On large farms, it looks better and it's easier to harvest.
Cook vegetable soup (tatos and carrots) and Noodle Cups (Razor grain) with dirty water at cooking stations. (They're good for you).
Settles don't consume it, but you can. Make all you need. But be sure to leave plenty of raw produce in the workshop in case crops are damaged in an attack. Also, you can trade a lot of cooked meals to the Bar tender (not barter) and they'll turn it around to sell it to you and make some money (which is good for their happiness).

I know it's kind of wierd, but when you help the settlers defend themselves, they express gratitude for helping them.

Hoard up heavy combat armour and gauss rifles. Equip a settler with those items and add 1 (one) 2mm ammo.

Send the settler to create a supply route to another settlement.

Congratulations, you have just created a very durable, heavily armoured mobile patrol with unlimited ammo, who can only ever be killed by your actions (mobs can only temporarily disable the Provisioner), and who will relentlessly slay anything and everything hostile along their route 24/7, giving you free XP whenever you happen to be close.

You can create a whole network of such patrols, they are not limited by anything bar the amount of settlers you need to keep the patrols fed.

6 on food, the rest on defensive duty and supply lines, until you build shops.

Then put a few on shops.

Pretty simple.

Simple game for simple minds.

Speaking of armoring your provisioners (and settlers for that matter).
You have to aquire favor with the railroad by helping them out to get this sweet armoring option.
Ballistic Fiber.
I clothe my settlers and provisioners with Military Fatigues modified with Ballistic Fiber Mk 5
along with equipping them with maxed out Gauss Rifles. The ballistic fiber Mk5 provides 110 resistance each to ballistic and engergy damage.
It provides better protection than heavy combat armor. BUT, if you add on top of that; combat armor modified to resist damage, energy AND radiation (which radiation doesn't matter to them) on top of that, you'll have top notch protection for your provisioners.
