Under Power > Miscellaneous > Vault-Tec Population Management System, there's a terminal you can build at any settlement. Needs 1 Power. On this terminal there is an option to tag companions. It then brings it up under Miscellaneous Quests that you can select and track, with location marker.
Failing that, I'd be inclined to look for your lost companion where you got them from. Unless you already dismissed them and selected for them to go to a specific settlement, they will always return to where they started.
Not sure what part of the original thread you're talking about.
As far as companions not going to the settlement you send them to; There is a bug with Nick where after dismissed he will sometimes return to the last settlement you had him at instead of the settlement you just sent him to. He then can be found at that earlier settlement.
Other companions have their own random bugs. I suggest Googling "Fallout 4 Companions" and reading up on whichever one you're having trouble with.
Edit; HMM, I guess he didn't want help with his problem. He deleted his post.
RIP necro thread.
